In 7th grade, students embark on an exciting journey through science using Discovery Education’s Science Techbook, a dynamic, phenomena-based curriculum designed to bring scientific concepts to life. The program is organized into four Units including Heat, Energy, and Waves, Dynamic Earth and Human Impacts, Interdependence, and Diversity of Life. Every lesson follows the research-backed 5E instructional model—Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, and Evaluate—creating a structured yet energetic flow that builds curiosity and student-driven inquiry. Students dive into real-world phenomena—questions like “How do wireless speakers work?” or “How do cuts heal?”—and investigate them through hands-on labs, interactive simulations, and STEM projects.
The following is a list of major works and major topics likely to be covered:
Quarter 1:
o Unit 5: Heat, Energy, and Waves (Physical Science)
o Concept 1: Thermal Energy
o Concept 2: Conservation of Energy
o Concept 3: Investigating Waves
Quarter 2:
o Unit 6: Dynamic Earth and Human Impacts
o Concept 1: The Rock Cycle
o Concept 2: Geologic History
o Concept 3: Plate Tectonics
Quarter 3:
o Unit 6: Dynamic Earth and Human Impacts
o Concept 4: Human Impacts
o Unit 7: Interdependence
o Concept 1: Trophic Relationships
o Concept 2: Ecosystem Relationships
Quarter 4:
o Unit 8: Diversity of Life
o Concept 1: Reproduction
o Concept 2: Artificial and Natural Selection
o Concept 3: Genes and Variation
o Concept 4: History of Life
The following textbook and resources will be used throughout the year (in addition to supplemental texts):
1. Discovery Education workbooks and online techbooks: each student will be provided with a workbook text they can annotate and manipulate. They are welcome to bring it home, but they MUST bring them to class every day. Pages may be removed to finish work at home if necessary. Each student will only receive one copy, so please be responsible with the texts.
Student Evaluation Grade Scale:
Assignments = 25% A: 90 -100
Quizzes/Tests = 50% B: 80-89
Labs/Stations = 25% C: 70-79
D: 60-69
F: 59 and below
Assignment Access:
All assignments will be posted on Google Classroom and may be accessed if a student is absent.
- No penalty will be assessed if students are absent for school related, prearranged, or excused absences. Students should contact the teacher before an absence, if possible, to get work and/or after returning to ensure all assignments are received and complete.
- Students are responsible for obtaining missing work. There will be a folder with work in class that students may access at any time for missing assignments.
- Be sure to check MyStudent frequently to access grades and google classroom for missing assignments.
