PEAK Novel Study

We are doing a Novel Study in 7th Grade ELA! I have a feeling our students are going to love reading PEAK and I enjoy using it to meet our state standards for ELA. Peak is so full on some of the most important issues our young adolescents face today. The book represents themes such as courage, honesty, interdependence, change, hope and respect. These themes are driven by the main character, named Peak, and the events that affect his survival while on Mt. Everest and his survival and growth as a young adolescent.

Peak is an extraordinary young man both in positive and negative ways. He loves his family but feels lost and confused. Though he seldom reveals his deep love and commitment to his mother, she is, in fact, his hero. He is close to his stepfather and dearly loves his twin half-sisters, but he has a “hole” in his heart. He attempts to fill this void in negative and abusive ways. He pushes his family’s grace to the limits by climbing skyscrapers and leaving his “tag.” Trouble catches Peak and his inner struggles become outward troubles with the law. All of Peak’s choices are taken from him in a dramatic fashion when he begins an adventure with his biological father far from the family that loves him. Though he travels far, this new adventure brings him closer to his family than he could have imagined and to an understanding of who he is and who he wants to become.

Students will with parts of speech, elements of literature, literary devices and even a bit of poetry.  Students will also research Mt. Everest and its indigenous people. Finally, students will work in small groups to create and analyze scenarios regarding each of the themes in the novel. Much of what students will know and be able to do will coincide with state standards and also touch on the unique needs and characteristics of young adolescents. I hope our students have a “peak” experience with the novel and unit. I highly recommend that each student buy their own book and take notes in the margins and learn to highlight and underline.

Please contact me if you have any concerns or questions. I enjoy the feedback!

Hello Reading Families!

I would like to introduced the Advanced Reading Challenge, or ARC. This is a unique optional reading program offered by Imagine Schools. Children accept the challenge of reading 25 high-quality books from a curated list and either complete an AR test or a project about them. Prizes are available along the way, including a $60 Barnes & Noble gift card! Nice!

The ARC is meant for strong readers who are at least reading on grade level. We have a second challenge for our students reading on a lower level. All students who do not choose the ARC will participate in "The 30 Book Challenge." This program also incentivizes students to stick with our school goal of finishing one chapter book a week.

Whichever challenge your child chooses, it is a win-win! They are required to read anyway - nightly homework is 30 minutes of reading. Why not earn prizes along the way? Completed ARC projects will substitute for weekly reading responses - there's no reason to double up on homework! Also, students will occasionally be able to use reading time to work on projects in class. We'll be dedicating a few minutes each Friday to present ARC projects, so ALL children will at least be hearing about these books, whether they sign up or not.

Of course, kids whose parents help keep them on track have the most success. This is why permission slips are required for the ARC. They went home today, and I have extras if needed. You can find the curated list of ARC books (there are hundreds) in my Google Classroom. Five of the twenty-five can be free choice books approved by me. I have many ARC books available in my classroom, but the public library and bookstores are great resources too.

For that last few years ISLOL has had awesome participation and a high number of finishers. We want to break all the records this year!

p.s. There is a pizza and movie party at the end of the year for finishers from BOTH challenges. It's a get-out-of-class pass! No one will want to stay behind and do work on this day . . . so get reading now! :)
