2023.06.23 eid mubarak!

We are delighted to announce that Eid el-Adha will be observed on Wednesday, June 28. Eid prayer will be held at the masjid. Takbeerat will commence at 8:30 AM followed by prayer at 9:00 AM. A special khutba will then be delivered by our Imam, Dr. Ismail El-Shikh, with refreshments served afterwards.

As parking space will be limited, it is our strong recommendation that you carpool if possible. Overflow parking will be available at the SDA Church on Manoa road and is a 4 minute walk from the Masjid.

Additional parking is available at Manoa Valley District Park. A group of generous brothers has graciously offered to shuttle people in their minivans from the park to the Masjid between 8:00 AM to 8:45 AM. The vehicles will be identifiable by an “Eid Mubarak” placard on their windshields. May Allah (SWT) reward them abundantly for their kind generosity.

Moreover, we will continue our Eid Celebration Saturday, July 1 at the Kaimuki High School Cafeteria starting at 10:00 AM. The cafeteria, and parking lots, can be most easily accessed via Leialoha Avenue through Kapahulu Safeway.

The day promises to be filled with joyous family-friendly festivities, including games, activities, gifts, bounce castles, and concessions. We strongly encourage parents to bring their children so they may experience the joy of Eid alongside their peers. Lunch will be served promptly at 12:30 PM, and the program will conclude following Asr Prayer at 4:00 PM.

On behalf of the MAH Executive Committee, we extend our warmest wishes for a most blessed Eid to you and your loved ones. We eagerly look forward to celebrating this joyous occasion with each and every one of you.

2023.04.20 eid mubarak!

Please be advised that parking will be limited; therefore, it is our strong recommendation that you carpool as able. Overflow parking will be available at the SDA Church on Manoa road and is a 4 minute walk from the masjid.

Additional parking is available at Manoa Valley District Park. A group of brothers have generously offered to shuttle people in their minivans from the park to the Masjid between 8:00 AM to 8:45 AM. They have informed us that they will have an “Eid Mubarak” placard on their windshield for identification. May Allah reward their kind generosity.

As previously announced, we will continue our eid celebration on Sunday, April 23 at Keehi Lagoon Memorial Burns Hall starting at 8:30 AM. The family-friendly festivities will include games, activities, gifts, bounce castles, and concessions. We strongly encourage parents to bring their children so they may experience the joyous occasion of eid with other children. Lunch will be served promptly at 11:30 AM. We wish you and your loved ones a most blessed eid and look forward to celebrating the occasion with you all.

2023.04.08 eid program

InshaAllah, we will be making an announcement regarding the date of Eid el-Fitr after maghreb prayer on Thursday, April 20. Details of the prayer time and location will be included in the announcement.

As Eid is most likely to be on a weekday, and to ensure all of our children are able to enjoy the holiday properly, we will be continuing our celebration on Sunday, April 23 at Keehi Lagoon Memorial Burns Hall (2685 North Nimitz Hwy).

Our family-focused program will begin at 9:00AM with games, gifts, bounce castles, and more. Refreshments and treats will be served throughout the program with lunch being served promptly at 11:30AM. The program will conclude following duhr prayer at 1:00PM.

2023.03.21 Ramadan mubarak!

Ramadan mubarak! InshaAllah, the first day of Ramadan will be Thursday, March 23rd, 2023. The first night of taraweeh this year will be Wednesday, March 22nd.

We will be offering a full program each night, inshaAllah. The program will inshaAllah begin nightly at 8:15 PM with Isha prayer followed by four rakat Taraweeh. This will be followed by a short talk on various aspects of Islam and Ramadan. Following the talk, we will continue with four additional rakat Taraweeh followed by a short recitation of the Quran.

To end, we will offer Shaf’a prayer, followed by Witr and Dua. The program will conclude at approximately 9:30 PM nightly. Tahajjud prayers will inshaAllah be offered in the last 10 nights starting at 4:00 AM.

2023.03.14 Ramadan program

As the blessed month of Ramadan is approaching and anticipated to begin on Thursday March 23, we are delighted to invite you to join us for our Ramadan program at the Masjid. We have planned a spiritually uplifting program, led by our Imam, that we hope will benefit everyone.

As announced many times at Jummuah prayer, parking near and around the Masjid continues to be a most contentious subject with our neighbors. Numerous complaints have been made to City Council members, state agencies, and the Honolulu Police Department. We are each ambassadors of Islam, and as such, this is not the message we want to send nor is it the reputation we want to create.

Our Prophet (SAW) taught us to be kind, thoughtful, and considerate to our neighbors. We look forward to Ramadan each year, but our neighbors unfortunately do not. With that in mind, this year we’re refocusing our efforts on being a great neighbor; the kind of neighbor our religion expects us to be therefore, there will be no Iftaar in the Masjid during this Ramadan. We will instead focus on our religious obligations and honor the teachings of our beloved Prophet (SAW). As a further reminder, please be courteous to our neighbors with respect to parking and noise.

We hope this Ramadan will be a time of spiritual growth and reflection. May Allah (SWT) accept our worship and prayers and bless us with His mercy and forgiveness.

2022.09.04 updated mask policy

Due to the declining number of COVID-related hospitalizations and increased ICU bed availability in Hawaii, we will be modifying our mask policy.

For brothers, masks will now be optional in the main prayer room for all prayers including Jumuah. In order to accommodate those who are in the higher risk categories, and those who wish to exercise continued caution, the outdoor lanai will be a dedicated mask-only area.

For sisters, masks will now be optional in the front prayer room for all prayers including Jumuah. The back prayer room will be a dedicated mask-only area.

It is our strong recommendation that you continue to wear your masks as our congregational prayers remain classified as "high-risk" gatherings by the CDC. Please do not come to the masjid if you have any COVID, flu, or common cold-like symptoms.

2022.09.03 Sunday school registration

Please use this Google form to register your children as soon as possible. This year's Sunday school will be 16 weeks long with a day off or fun activity every fourth week. Registration is available for students ages 5-18.

2022.07.05 eid mubarak!

Asalaamu Alaikum dear brothers and sisters,

InshaAllah you are well and benefiting immensely from these blessed 10 days of Dhul Hijjah. Eid Al-Adha will, inshaAllah, be on Saturday, July 9, 2022 and take place at Keehi Lagoon Memorial Burns Hall (2685 N Nimitz Hwy).

Takbeerat will begin at 8:15 AM followed by prayer promptly at 8:45 AM. Light refreshments will be served following prayer. The festivities will continue thereafter including bouncers, games and gifts for children. Lunch will be served as well as popcorn, shaved ice, and cotton candy. The program will conclude following Dhuhr prayer. Parking is free and plentiful.

Masks will be required inside the ballroom during the takbeerat, prayer and khutba but are optional after prayers and in the open areas. Volunteers are welcomed as always, simply reply to this email with your interest.

We look forward to seeing all of you, especially our beloved children, this Saturday. Eid Mubarak!

2022.04.30 eid mubarak!

The crescent moon of Shawwal was not sighted this evening, therefore eid will be on Monday, May 2nd, 2022. The prayer will be at Manoa Valley District Park (2721 Kaaipu Ave) with takbeerat starting at 8:45 AM and prayer followed by khutba at 9:00 AM. Refreshments will be offered following the khutba.

Because eid will be on a weekday, and in order to ensure all our children attend, we will continue our eid celebration on the following Sunday, May 8th, at Keehi Memorial Lagoon Burns Hall (2685 North Nimitz Hwy). The program will begin at 9:30 AM with bounce houses, games, and gifts for children. Brunch will be served promptly at 11 AM. The program will end after duhr prayer at 1 PM.

2022.04.01 Ramadan mubarak!

InshaAllah, the first day of Ramadan is tomorrow, Saturday, April 2nd. The first night of taraweeh this year is tonight, Friday, April 1st at 8:30pm.

We will be offering a full program each night, inshaAllah. Please refer to the prior post regarding updates to the MAH attendance policy.

The Ramadan program will be as follows:

As we are still in a pandemic, there will be no iftaars in the masjid. For those interested in sponsoring an iftaar, you may do so as a boxed drive-thru at the masjid no later than 90 minutes before Maghreb.

2022.03.29 attendance policy update

As you are aware, the State of Hawaii lifted the mask mandate late last week. However, as of today, the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) and the State of Hawaii DOH (Department of Health), maintain that: “masks are still strongly recommended for people over age 65, people with compromised immune systems, people who aren’t vaccinated, and those who care for people at risk of severe illness.” Further, both the CDC and DOH label as “highest risk” “large in-person gatherings where participants’ vaccination status is unknown and not everyone is wearing a mask, it is difficult for individuals to remain spaced at least six feet apart, and people hug or otherwise touch. The risk is increased further if attendees come from different communities, towns, cities, or counties.”

Alhamdulillah for us Muslims, there is an increased reward when we wear a mask with the intention to protect the elderly, the frail and those who are sick.

As such, although masks are no longer mandated by local laws, we will continue requiring masks in all areas except the Daawah Center. Unlike governing bodies whose priorities are a combination of politics, economy, and the well-being of their populace; our sole priority has been, and continues to be, to keep the masjid open while providing a safe place of worship for all members of our community.

With that said, we remain in a pandemic and have a sizable portion within our community who are elderly and/or have pre-existing conditions that put them at great risk if they contract COVID-19 or other easily communicable diseases. Please consider it a mercy on your fellow brothers and sisters when you wear your mask and not a violation of your rights.

Because of the upcoming month of Ramadan and our desire to accommodate everyone in our community, and encourage everyone to attend the masjid, we will InshaAllah make an area available for those wishing to pray without a mask due to health or personal reasons.

Therefore, the following changes will be implemented to the MAH attendance policy for all prayers effective this Friday, April 1, 2022.

1.      Inside the masjid (musalla)

a.      All obligatory prayers and Taraweeh will be held shoulder to shoulder with no physical distancing). Wearing a mask covering nose and mouth is required at all times.

b.      Please bring your own prayer mat as there will be no vinyl mats placed.

2.      Upper and lower outdoor lanai areas

a.      This area will be reserved for worshippers observing the 6-foot distancing for all prayers.

b.      Mask covering nose and mouth will be required at all times.

c.      Please bring your own prayer mat. Vinyl mats will be placed as distancing markers.

3.      Daawah Center

a.      This area will be reserved for worshippers preferring shoulder to shoulder for all prayers with no physical distancing and no mask requirement.

b.      Mask may be removed upon entering this area but must be reapplied upon leaving it.

c.      Please bring your own prayer mat.

May Allah swt accept your worship. We look forward to seeing you and praying beside you all.

Jazakum Allah Kheir

2022.02.21 attendance policy update

Please be advised that MAH will start implementing the following updates to the attendance policy effective this Tuesday, February 22, 2022:

1.      All regular prayers (not including Jumuah):

a.      Upon entering the masjid, each person is assigned a spot on one of the mats which are preset 6ft apart as we currently have them.

b.      Once the iqamah is announced, anyone who is comfortable with praying shoulder-to-shoulder will stand in the front row (for the group prayer only) and everyone else will remain on their mats where they can pray 6ft apart from each other.

c.      Immediately after the group prayer is finished, the people in the front row will go back to their original mats for tasbeeh and individual sunna prayers.

2.      Jumuah Prayer: The current 6ft separation will remain in all prayer areas except for the outdoor, lower parking lot which will be reserved for shoulder-to-shoulder prayers only.

Please keep in mind that we are still in the middle of a pandemic and we have among us some worshippers with pre-existing health conditions. Therefore, we will continue strictly enforcing the requirement of face masks that properly cover the nose and mouth. Registration for Jumuah prayer remains mandatory.

2021.11.17 all daily prayers resume at MAH

We are pleased to inform you that the masjid will be open for all five daily prayers effective immediately. In order to accommodate everyone who wants to attend congregational prayers regardless of their vaccine status, we will continue implementing the current law of six feet distancing and masks at all times. It is our sincere hope that local laws will eventually give us the freedom to return to praying side by side once again. Listed below are current iqama times. We look forward to seeing you all.

Please note that registration is still required prior to attending the Friday prayer. Registration is not required for the remaining prayers.

Fajr             5:45am

Dhuhr        1:00pm

Asr             4:00pm

Maghrib    6:00pm

Isha            7:30pm

2021.07.20 goodie bag distribution

This year has been a challenging one for most people; however, as Muslims we know that all things that are allowed by Allah must have their own blessings, and the pandemic is no exception. Along with the tragedy and suffering, there has also been a silver lining to the quarantine we’ve endured for the last 16 months. It has brought most families closer, allowing each of us to re-evaluate what is most important to us in this life. It has also reignited some creativity and ingenuity in our problem-solving skills. The pandemic threatened to separate us from our beloved masjid, but the pandemic could never separate us from Allah. So, when the time was right, Allah made things easy for us to reopen our masjid in a safe and responsible manner. The same holds true for our eid celebration. Although the time is not right to resume our normal eid celebration, we don’t want to give up entirely; therefore we were challenged to come up with an alternative way to celebrate, especially for our children. As such, we designed a drive-thru goodie bag pickup for our children.

WHEN: Because Eid el-Adha will be on a weekday this year, we are doing our goodie bag drive thru on Saturday, July 24th, 2021 from 11 AM to 1:30 PM, at the Muslim Association of Hawaii, located at 1935 Aleo Place, Honolulu, HI 96822, inshaAllah.

HOW: We’re asking you to sign up/register your children for a goodie bag by registering at https://www.silah.org/eid-goodie-bag-registration . The process is very similar to registering for a prayer. When you click on the link above, it takes you to a calendar where the only date available is July 24th, as this is the one and only time we will be distributing the goodie bags for this Eid el-Adha. Once you select July 24 on the calendar, it will bring you to the registration form. Please fill out the registration form completely with your information. At the bottom of the form there are four (4) mandatory questions, each requiring your input to complete and accept your registration. Two (2) of the questions require you to identify:

1.) how many adults will be in your car at the drive thru, and;

2.) how many children will be in your vehicle.

We are asking that you register your children as soon as possible so that we have the time needed to purchase all items and put together each goodie bag, inshaAllah. The goodie bag drive thru registration will close by end-of-day on Thursday, July 22nd. JazakAllah Kheir for your continued cooperation and support!

2021.07.14 eid mubarak!

Asalaamu alaikum brothers & sisters,

Insha'Allah, this message finds you all in the best of health and strongest of iman. InshaAllah, Eid el-Adha will be on Tuesday, July 20, 2021. Due to current laws regarding large gatherings in response to the current COVID-19 pandemic, we will be offering Eid el-Adha prayer and khutba at the masjid to the lawful maximum capacity. In order to protect attendees and minimize time within a confined area, the program will consist of Eid prayer and a short khutba.

Registration for Eid prayer will open on Friday, July 16 at 6PM, and will automatically close as soon as we reach the maximum capacity allowed under the law. As the sisters and brothers prayer rooms have a different maximum capacity, brothers and sisters must register in the appropriate area of registration (brothers in the brothers registration area and sisters in the sisters registration area) of the website, otherwise the reservation will be canceled. Please note that no one will be allowed to attend the Eid prayer and khutba without a confirmed registration, a mask covering mouth and nose, prayer rug and maintenance of six feet of physical distancing at all times. Children can pray next to their parents.  Please note, there will not be any registration allowed on the day of Eid.

To accommodate our community, we will Insha’Allah hold two Eid prayers. The first one will be at 8:45AM and the second at 10:30 AM. Gates will open 30 minutes prior to each prayer time and close 5 minutes prior to the prayer time. To register, please visit https://www.silah.org/prayer-registration.

Children are welcome to attend Eid prayer. However, they must pray next to their father or mother and remain with their parent for the entire prayer and khutba. When registering yourself with a child or children, in the registration form it asks for your first name and within the first name data field of the registration form, please put your first name and the number of children being registered to pray next to you so that we can set up the prayer mats properly while still maintaining the required 6 feet of separation. For example, if your first name is "Mohammed," and you have 3 children that will be praying next to you, then in the first name data field of the registration form please input, "Mohammed, 3 children." If the children will be praying next to their mother, then the children must be identified with the mother's registration, such as "Khadija, 2 children," as these two children will be praying next to their mother, Khadija. Please note that family members residing in the same household must pray near each other so that we can accommodate more families.

For those that are unable to attend at the masjid, you may live stream the Eid prayer and khutba on our Facebook page as well as on YouTube. Please note that the sisters are working on an Eid program for the children which will be announced in a separate email.

Jazakum Allah Kheir and Eid Mubarak. We look forward to seeing you all on Eid Day, July 20, 2021 Insha’Allah.

2021.05.13 statement condemning Israel atrocities and call to action

Honolulu, HI - The Muslim Association of Hawaii (MAH) and SILAH condemn in the strongest terms the repeated barbaric attacks by the Israeli occupation authorities against the Palestinian people, worshipers and unarmed civilians, killing at least 56 individuals including 14 children and injuring hundreds of elderly, women and children.

MAH and SILAH further condemn the Israeli occupation forces’ continuation of their colonial programs, building of settlements, confiscation of Palestinian properties, the violent attacks on Palestinian worshipers and protesters at the Al-Aqsa Masjid, the ongoing campaign to expel Palestinian families from Jerusalem’s Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood, and the general forceful eviction of Palestinians from their land.

MAH and SILAH call on the Biden administration and elected officials to condemn the policy of suppression and tyranny of the Israeli government. We further call on the Biden administration to end its silence in response to Israel ignoring the White House’s calls for de-escalation and opting to increase missile strikes on Palestinian civilians prior to engaging in ceasefire talks.

MAH and SILAH are also urging our President and his administration to cease blocking the United Nations Security Council's attempts to issue a joint statement on the situation in Gaza.

MAH and SILAH join the local Palestinians and other organizations in condemning Israel’s vicious killings, and will join the “sign-waving in solidarity with Palestine” event on Saturday, May 15, 2021 from 4 - 6pm at the corner of Ala Moana Boulevard and Atkinson Drive. While we do not endorse any individual charity, there are many organizations like the Gaza Orphan Fund at https://secure.irusa.org/donate/give-gift that are collecting donations to assist those affected by the ongoing violence. In whatever way you choose to support, know that you are performing your Islamic duty in rallying to the aid of your brothers and sisters.

2021.05.11 eid mubarak!

Assalamu Alaikum dear brothers and sisters,

There was no confirmed sighting of the moon from multiple locations in Hawaii. Therefore, we will inshaAllah complete 30 days of fasting. As such, Eid el-Fitr for this year will inshaAllah be on Thursday, May 13, 2021. The last taraweeh prayer for this year will be this evening, Tuesday, May 11th, and the last day of Ramadan 2021 will be tomorrow, Wednesday, May 12th, inshaAllah.

We Pray that Allah swt accepts your fasting and worship.

Jazak Allah kheir.

2021.05.09 eid prayer registration

As you are aware, we opened registration for Eid prayers yesterday, and within a couple of hours we reached maximum capacity and the registration was automatically closed.  After consultation with health professionals and an Islamic Mashura, we feel that we can safely open for a second Eid prayer, Insha’Allah. We will need cooperation from those who registered for the first Eid Prayer to immediately exit the Masjid after the Imam is finished so that we can properly sanitize the Masjid and get ready for the second Eid Prayer. Similarly, we will need cooperation from those who will be registering for the second Eid prayer to arrive on time and not before the gates open. This will allow us, as volunteers, to complete the cleanup and sanitization of the Masjid. Please note that all safety and health measures instituted must be adhered to.

As such, it gives us a great pleasure to announce that the second Eid prayer will be offered at 10:30 AM on Eid Day. Gates will open at 10AM and close at 10:25AM. Registration for the second Eid prayer will open this afternoon (Sunday 05/09/21) at 6:00PM, Insha’Allah, and will automatically close as soon as we reach the maximum capacity allowed under the law.

Registration can be made at silah.org under “prayer registration” or using this direct link: https://www.silah.org/prayer-registration. Children will be allowed to attend the Eid prayer so long as they can pray next to their father or mother and will need to remain with their parent(s) for the entire prayer and khutba. When registering yourself with a child or children, the registration form asks for your first name ,and within the first name data field of the registration form, please put your first name and the number of children being registered to pray next to you so that we can set up the prayer mats properly, still maintaining the required 6-ft of separation. For example, if your first name is "Mohammed," and you have 3 children that will be praying next to you, then in the first name data field of the registration form please input, "Mohammad, three children." If the children will be praying next to their mother, then the children must be identified with the mother's registration, such as "Khadija, two children," as these two children will be praying next to their mother, Khadija. Please note, that family members residing in the same household must pray near each other so that we can accommodate more families.

As you know, sisters and brothers prayer rooms have a different maximum capacity, and therefore brothers and sisters must register in the appropriate area of registration (brothers in the brothers registration area and sisters in the sisters registration area) of the website; otherwise the registration will be canceled. Please note that no one will be allowed to attend the Eid prayer and khutba without a confirmed registration. Please also note, there will not be any registration allowed on the day of Eid.

The date of Eid will be announced, as is the case every year, pending the moon sighting by designated parties throughout the state. An announcement will be made simultaneously on our website, Facebook page, and voicemail recording (808-947-6263) on the evening of Tuesday, May 11th .

Due to current laws regarding large gatherings in response to the current COVID-19 pandemic, we will be offering Eid Al-Fitr prayer and khutba at the Masjid to the lawful maximum capacity. In order to protect attendees and minimize time within a confined area, the program will consist of a brief prayer and khutba only.

For those who are unable to attend in person, you may live stream the Eid Prayer and khutba on our Facebook page as well as on Youtube. Additionally, Insha'Allah, we will be having a special Eid goodie bag drive-thru for the children on Saturday, May 15th, 2021 from 11 AM to 1 PM. We are doing this on Saturday so that more children can participate, insha'Allah, as we recognize that Eid will fall on a school day. Additionally, by moving the goodie bag drive thru to Saturday, it allows us to hold a second Eid prayer on the actual day of Eid. Having the goodie bag drive thru on Saturday encourages maximum participation from our kids and hopefully gives the children something fun to look forward to. A separate email will be sent out to explain how to register your children for this special event.

We look forward to seeing you on Eid Day, Insha’Allah!

 Jazakum Allah Kheir & Fiamanillah!

2021.04.11 Ramadan mubarak!

Assalamu Alaikum dear brothers and sisters,

The assigned groups, at multiple locations in Hawaii, were not able to sight the moon and therefore we will complete 30 days in Shaaban tomorrow. InshaAllah, the first day of Ramadan will be on Tuesday, April 13th. The first night of taraweeh this year will be tomorrow, Monday, April 12th at 8:30pm. Registration to attend prayers at the masjid is required due to limited space availability created by the law-mandated 6 feet of physical distancing. Registration opens 24 hours prior to the prayer and closes at 4pm on the afternoon of the prayer. The gates to the masjid will open 15 minutes prior to the prayer and will close at 8:30pm sharp. Please be reminded that everyone must wear a mask covering mouth and nose, keep 6 feet of distance at all times, sanitize their hands, and bring their own prayer rug.

2021.04.10 Ramadan update

Assalamu Alaikum dear sisters and brothers,

InshaAllah this message finds you and your families in the best of health and strongest of Iman. Firstly, we would like to thank you for your patience and cooperation with the necessary changes that were made to our attendance policy in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Although the past five months since reopening our masjid have been challenging, it is by Allah’s grace that we remain able to safely have congregational prayers on a daily basis. This is also a reminder that, although some restrictions have been lifted as Honolulu has transitioned to Tier 3, none of those changes affect our current attendance policy.

As you are aware, the blessed month of Ramadan is quickly approaching. Ramadan this year will InshaAllah start either Monday April 12 or Tuesday the 13th. We will InshaAllah update our voicemail recording (8089476263), our website, and our Facebook page, as soon as we confirm the start date. After many planning meetings, consultations with religious and health professionals, and further due diligence we have concluded that if safety measures and attendance guidelines are strictly adhered to and there are sufficient volunteers, it is possible to safely offer Taraweeh prayers in the masjid during Ramadan. The program will consist of Isha prayer followed immediately by 8 Rakaat of Taraweeh. Capacity will be 60 brothers and sisters including volunteers. To provide a fair and equal opportunity for anyone who wishes to attend, registration will be required daily and will open 24 hours before the day of prayer and close at 4PM on the day of prayer. If capacity is met, registration will be closed for that day.  If you are not registered or do not fulfill all requirements in our attendance policy, you will not be admitted into the masjid. To keep our community safe and to comply with all laws and safety measures, NO exceptions will be made. The program will then be continued at 9:30pm on the Zoom platform as is currently being done led by Imam. We ask for your cooperation by only showing up when you have an email confirmation and be on time as the gates will close promptly a couple minutes before Iqama. When you are  in the Majid, and in order to adhere to all safety measures that are in place, please bring your prayer rug with you, wear your mask to cover your mouth and nose, sanitize your hands and keep the required 6ft physical distancing at all times. Please note that due to the limited capacity, the registration will be limited to the age of seven years or older.

Please note that offering Taraweeh prayers during Ramadan will only be possible if we have enough volunteers from the community to ensure safety for all. If you are interested in volunteering, please email us at mahmasjid@gmail.com with your name and phone number and we will get in touch with you. We look forward to seeing you all.

Jazaakom Allah Kheir

2020.10.01 COVID-19 update

Asalaamu Alaikum Wa Rahmatullah dear sisters and brothers,

Preparations to reopen the masjid began immediately following its closure in March. The Executive Committee has been meeting regularly with the sole goal of reopening the masjid responsibly at the earliest possible time.

Some of the preparations include procurement of sanitation supplies and equipment, sufficient Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) for volunteers, plexiglass barriers, development of an all-electronic web-based registration and attendance platform for contact tracing, and blueprinting the entire premises to determine maximum capacity to comply with physical distancing requirements.

These preparations were ready months ago as our hope and plan had been to reopen in August. It was at this time that the COVID-19 spike in Hawaii was beginning, and after consultation with several healthcare providers and administrators it became clear that reoopening would be unsafe and irresponsible, with a high probability of causing harm to our community members. Volunteering to serve our community is an amana from Allah and none of us take this responsibility lightly. Therefore we could not recklessly reopen the masjid without factoring in our Islamic teachings. Our Prophet (SAW) has given us clear guidance regarding our duties and responsibilities during situations like a plague or pandemic, which our imam has eloquently explained to our community on numerous occasions during nightly halaqahs.

We are aware that some counties in different states with lower COVID-19 positivity rates reopened their masajids. Unfortunately, Honolulu was not one of these counties. In fact, since the start of the local COVID-19 spike in early August, Honolulu County has had either the highest, or was among the highest, infection rates in the nation. This trend continues to this day.

As a reminder, we are not immune from COVID-19 as Muslims. Several dozen regular members of our community have contracted the virus, though the numbers are likely more as these are only the individuals who reached out to the committee, Brother Hakim, or the imam.

Alhamdullilah, there seems to be some light at the end of the tunnel. Last week we worked with the brothers at the Kauai masjid to reopen this week, with the first Jummah Prayer taking place on Friday, October 2nd, inshaAllah. For Honolulu, based on available information, we remain optimistic that should the trend continue to decline with fewer people testing positive, we can implement the previously developed plans to reopen our masjid on a limited basis for Isha prayer as early as the week of October 5th, inshaAllah. Our plan is to continue adding additional prayers each week until we are fully opened.

During the last few months that our masjid has been closed we have tried to use this time that Allah made available to us to start several improvement projects which are at various points of completion. They include general repair-work, security gates at our two entrance points, as well as plans to increase capacity. However, reopening of the masjid is not dependent on completion of any of them.

Please be mindful that unforeseen circumstances may alter these target dates. However, we will continue to provide updates to you as they become available.

Jazakum Allah Kheir
