Welcome to the School of Nursing for the 2024-2025 academic year!  This year the BSN program theme will be "Empathy".   As you start your first year through final year here at Husson School of Nursing, we will be working over the year to embrace our nursing skill of empathy.  The Oxford dictionary online defines "empathy" as "noun- the ability to understand and share the feelings of another."  Nurses have included empathy as a core nursing skill for many years and empathy contribute to the primary reason that nursing has held the spot of most trusted profession for many years according to Gallup polls.  More recently, there has also been a drop in ethics and trust among many professions over more recent years, but nurses have maintained a top spot of being ethical and honest. https://news.gallup.com/poll/608903/ethics-ratings-nearly-professions-down.aspx  As there are many global, national and local/state changes in our healthcare landscape and within our environments of lack of civility and discord, now is a significant time for us as current and future nurses, to develop and share our empathy skills with all who we touch on a daily basis.  You will have chances this next year to develop your skills of empathy through group and class activities, showing care to both your colleagues, faculty and those you interact with in clinicals and labs/simulation, and more importantly, to those around you.  I look forward to leading our skill development as a school of nursing and look forward to embracing our creativity and innovation in showing our empathy as a BSN program.
