  • Beginning in 2009, Newmont Mining Corporation began allocating its school-designated grant funds to the Humboldt County School District for distribution to where school officials feel there is the greatest need. Newmont officials said they believe the school district has the best knowledge of how to distribute the funds. Newmont said it was also a good way of getting the community more involved in the donation process. Each school year, Newmont donates $30,000 to the district. Staff members are then asked to submit applications for review; a school district committee oversees the distribution of the funds. Applicants are asked to submit proposals for funding that will most benefit students in the classroom; collaborative applications between teachers, grade-levels and schools are encouraged. Humboldt County School District Superintendent Dave Jensen said the Newmont donation program has been of great benefit to the district. “This really is a fantastic gesture on Newmont’s part. We appreciate their willingness to help support local education.”
