What is APEC?
The (Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation) member ECONOMIES, (NOT "Countries,") have met yearly since 1998. A delegation of officials, including the head of state, from each country meets with other delegations and individual leaders primarily to discuss trade issues. Often the heads of state also meet in pairs to discuss even more important matters and troublesome issues. APEC provides the leaders of two countries with a yearly chance to discuss issues without the formality and politics of a formal state visit.
Why is APEC in Hawaii?
Each year a different member economy plays host to the meeting. In 2011 it is the turn of the USA to host the event. Honolulu won the competition among several US cities to play host this year. It will probably be at least 21 years before the USA again gets to host APEC, and Honolulu may not get chosen next time around. In 2012 the APEC meeting will be hosted by Russia in the city of Moscow.
