Our stems are our friends! We use Michael Clay Thompson's program called Word Within the Word to learn Greek and Latin word stems. Research has proven that students who know these stems are better readers, writers, and test takers. Plus, Ms. Jackson and I met Michael Clay Thompson one time in Charleston and he was really cool.
Your stems will also help you answer two of our important 6th Grade Essential Questions:
How does my knowledge of Greek and Latin roots and affixes help me understand the meaning of an unfamiliar word?
Why is the ability to spell new words using Greek and Latin roots and affixes important to me as a writer?
Click here to print your own List 1-5; then study at home with your friends and family. Make flashcards, call them out to each other, and play crazy stem games. It's fun for the whole family!
