About First Grade

First Grade Procedures

Dear Parents,

Welcome to the wonderful world of first grade. We anticipate a year of new beginnings and great educational and personal growth! We have dedicated teachers who will engage your child in a curriculum of “hands on” learning experiences. Get ready for a busy year where your commitment to your child’s education is an important component to your child’s success.

Homework (Newsletter-Weekly) – A homework folder will go home each day. We read for a few minutes each night. On Mondays it will include a homework sheet listing homework assignments and test dates for the week. Please check this every day! All homework assignments should be signed by a parent each night. Please read the additional information regarding homework included in this packet.

Field Trips – In recent years we have attended programs at the Peace Center, Children's Museum, Roper Mountain Science Center, picnic in a park, Furman, and a visit from The Children’s Theater. You will receive advance notification of upcoming field trips. Because of COVID we will not be going on Field trips this year.

Birthdays – Birthdays are VERY important to us! You are welcome to send a birthday treat on your child’s birthday, during lunch time so we can join in the celebration, however, we cannot host class parties. Because of COVID we will not be able to host parents during lunch.

Conferences – Conferences will be scheduled at the end of the first and third nine weeks or at other times as needed. Please send a note or call the office (355-5200) or the classroom (355-5223) to schedule a conference.

Dismissal Arrangements – No Dismissals after 1:30. Please send a note on the days of early dismissals or if there is a change in the way your child will go home. –If the dismissal is due to a doctor’s appointment, please send a doctor’s excuse the following day. Do not call to change a dismissal plan-voicemail is not dependable.

Attendance - Our school day begins at 7:45 AM. Please arrange to have your child at school by 7:30 AM to allow time for organizational responsibilities and time to be informed of daily school activities. Arrivals after 7:45 must report to the office for a tardy slip. In the event of illness, please send a note when your child returns to school. All missed assignments must be made up as soon as possible.

Lunch Money-We are not taking cash or change for lunch accounts. Please use the online "My School Bucks" to take care of meal balances. You may visit the Parent tab, lunch menu, scroll down for information, from our Gateway Home page. Lunch cost is $2.50(daily) and $12.50(weekly). Gateway is taking part in Universal Breakfast, Breakfast is free.

Personal Belongings - Label all your child’s personal belongings. Please do not allow your child to bring toys to school.

Thank you for your support. We are looking forward to a great year!
