Each child that is in speech therapy has a "speech folder" for their homework exercises. There will be a short assignment each day/week for the student to complete at home. Some assignments will be on a monthly calendar, while others will be weekly worksheets. Children working on “articulation” will be working on specific sounds, such as “r” or “s.” Those working on “language” will have assignments working on things such as vocabulary, recalling details, making inferences, etc. Some children also have “fluency” goals to help improve the smoothness of their speech. Each child’s homework assignments will be specific to what they are working on in speech therapy. To provide an incentive for each child to complete their speech homework, they will receive a sticker to put on the back of their speech folder. Once they have filled the entire grid (30 stickers), they will be rewarded with a “speech party.” The purpose of a speech party is to motivate each child to work hard on their speech/language goals, both while at school and at home. The following rules will apply:
Each student will receive a sticker each time they come to therapy with their speech folder (no folder=no sticker)
They will not receive a sticker if there is no parent signature for homework completion
Bad behavior in speech may result in losing their sticker for the day; however, good behavior may earn it back.
Supporting and encouraging children to work on their speech goals outside of the school setting helps them progress more quickly towards mastering their speech/language goals.
