Classroom Management – Students will receive a warning or redirection. If the poor choice continues, they will be given time away from the group or activity to think, until they show they are ready to make good choices. *Love and Logic
Star of the Week – Each child will have the opportunity to be the star of the week. Please help your child fill out the sheet of their favorites and provide pictures for the bulletin board.
Birthdays - They are celebrated at the end of the day (2:30). If your child has a summer birthday, we will be celebrating it on their ½ birthday.
Spelling Checks –At the end of the year, all of the priority spelling words will be compiled and tested over. The spelling of Priority words is on the report card. Spelling checks will be given every Friday. Our first spelling check will be September 14th. The spelling words will come home the Friday before the test allowing students a week to study.
Responsibilities - Each week, your child will be given 4 different responsibilities/activities to complete (Mon- Thur). On Friday, if the student completed all the activities accurately, they will get the chance to participate in “Fun Centers” (blocks, teacher center, math shelf, paint, puzzles, etc). If they did not complete the activities accurately, they will receive guided instruction on Friday to ensure success. Responsibility papers will come home stapled together in his/her Friday folder.
Reading envelopes - reading envelopes may come home throughout the week or on Fridays. Your child’s guided reading book and other supplemental materials that need to be practiced will be included. Please have your child read the book and return it the following school day.
Newsletter - The newsletter will tell you what we are currently learning about and what can be practiced at home. The newsletters will be emailed to you.
Don’t hesitate to contact me if there is a concern.

Published stories – Throughout the year, your child will “publish” their writing and bring it home to you to read. Please take the time to write a meaningful comment on the back page. A positive note goes a long way and is very motivating for a student to continue to do their best in writing. I ask that once you are done reading these “published stories”, please return them to school so I can put them in their portfolio.
Movies – “Mom and Dad, we watched another movie today”. Rest assured, your child is learning and interacting with others all day! Occasionally, a short video clip will be shown to deeper the understanding of a topic.
READ, READ, READ with your child – 15 - 20 minutes per day - First Grade is a BIG YEAR FOR READING! “If a child is a poor reader at the end of first grade, there is an almost 90% probability that the child will be a poor reader at the end of fourth grade.” – American Educator, 2004
Monthly Reading Calendar- Starting in October, your child will log their minutes reading at home to earn a prize. A goal will be set for them each month as to how many minutes to read. These need to be returned at the end of the month.
Book orders – They will come home maybe 3 times in a year – great way to buy books at your child’s level for a reasonable price. This year, you will be able to order online too.
