Limitations of this Procedure:
This procedure is a scaled version
As updates happen newer options become available and sometimes options are taken away
Select the settings app.
Click Screen Time on the left navigation bar, then "Use Screen Time Passcode" on the right side. This will make sure your student can't change any settings.
Note: From here, you have a lot of options you may perform:
Downtime
App Limits
Communication Limits
Always Allowed
Content & Privacy Restrictions
Allows you to create a schedule, and the "Downtime" period would be when the iPad essential is disabled, except for the apps you allow, and phone calls will be accepted.
If you want your student to be off and sleep from 10:00pm to 7:00am, you would designate the "Downtime" for 10:00pm to 7:00am, either Every Day, or you can "Customize" the day.
You can designate an app, or application category, to only be allowed for a certain amount of time per day. To do this:
Click "App Limits," then click "Add Limit."
Now, click the drop down to the right side of a category if you're going to restrict the time limit on a specific app, or just check the box to the left of a category to restrict the entire category. It is a good idea to verify the apps that will be restricted if you choose an entire category. Click "Next."
Now, you can customize the time and keep it the same for every day, or click on "Customize Days" and change the time limit per individual days. When you've set it in a way that you want, click "Add."
This option restricts who your student can contact during Downtime and allowed screen time.
Note: This option ONLY applies to the phone, Facetime, Messages, and iCloud Contacts. Apps such as Snapchat, Messenger, Instagram, or any others used for communication are not affected by these limits.
The apps chosen here will be allowed at all times (to include during downtime), or if you chose a specific category to block in App Limits.
To always allow a specific app, just click the green "+" button next to the App.
Check the box to allow restrictions.
You may allow or disallow any of the settings. Our recommendations of what NEEDS to be allowed:
Under "iTunes & App Store Purchases":
Allow Installing Apps (teachers may require apps to be installed during class)
Under "Allowed Apps"
Keep Book Store, Safari, FaceTime, and Camera enabled, as some teachers may require the use of FaceTime
Content Restrictions:
Keep Screen Recording set to Allow
"Allow All Apps" - Restricting based on age may cause some required apps to disappear.
Location Services
Keep this to allowed, as it is used for Find My iPad if the iPad gets lost.
Microphone
Keep this setting set as "Allow," since some courses require voice recordings.
The rest of the settings are based on personal preference.
You will do everything as listed above, but on the parent’s iPhone.
To Enable family sharing (on the parent’s device):
Go to Settings -> Click on the account name at the top -> Family Sharing -> Add Family Member…
Either they can “Invite via iMessage..,” “Invite in Person,” (most likely choice) or “Create a Child Account.”
With Invite via iMessage, the student will click on the iMessage and accept it.
With Invite in Person, enter the student’s apple ID email and password. If they have two-factor authentication enabled, the student will need their iPad/iPhone and enter the given code.
Once the student has joined, make sure “Screen Time” is enabled for Shared Features.
Go back to the main Settings page, click “Screen Time,” then select the child’s account.
Repeat the same process as above, editing the required time limits / App restrictions
