Hours – Playground Supervision
7:40 A.M. – 8:10 A.M.
10:15 A.M. - 10:30 A.M.
11:50 A.M. – 12:30 P.M.
Children are supervised, by our staff (our playground supervisors) before school, at recess, and at lunchtime. Our supervisors, with support from our staff and administration, work with great energy to keep our playground and our school safe for our children, dealing daily with concerns/ problems/accidents etc. that might arise while the children are at play. As we move forward through this school year, we must work together to ensure our children are in a safe, fun-filled environment during our school day.
Important Notice Re: Allergies
As you may be aware, several of the students at Riverside Elementary have allergies to various nuts (oils and peanut residuals). It has become necessary, for the health, safety and welfare of our students, that our school remain a “Peanut & Nut-Free School”. We do realize that many children enjoy peanut butter sandwiches and cookies or other treats containing nuts at school, however, we must keep the safety of our children foremost in our minds. As a result, we must appeal to your sense of concern for the well being of all people here at Riverside as we ask that no peanut butter or nut products of any kind be brought to school. Your concern and effort with this request would be appreciated by all at Riverside Elementary.
Student Medication
CBVRCE policy prohibits staff from providing students with medication unless parents/guardians complete the proper forms. Medicine must be that prescribed by an authorized health care professional or a physician. A request for the administration of medication must be made, in writing, to the school. Forms are available through the administration office at the school. An appropriate print out from the pharmacy detailing pertinent information pertaining to the prescribed medication must accompany this request.
Scent Conscious
We appeal to your sense of concern for the well being of all people here at Riverside. Each day we are presented with ever increasing allergies, asthma and basic breathing disorders, sensitivities and difficulties. Riverside is not free of such concerns! Many of these troubles can be influenced by the products that are in our everyday environments. As a staff and a school community, we’d like to make an effort to have our school become a scent reduced, if not scent free, environment for all children, staff and school users. With this in mind, I’d ask that we all be conscious of the various deodorants, colognes, perfumes, soaps, shampoos, etc. doing our part to assist the people afflicted with these obstacles to their good health. I’d ask that, as a group, we try to reduce or eliminate the use of scented products with our children or, personally, when we are to be at the school. This effort would be appreciated by all at Riverside Elementary.
Parking & Student Pick-Up
We are requesting that cars on the school grounds be restricted to the parking area away from the bus lanes. We would also encourage student drop-off, if necessary, to be done quickly with the safety of our children in mind. Any child transferring buses or being picked up for any after-school activity must bring a note for the teacher and bus driver or parents/guardians should contact the teacher directly. It is absolutely necessary that school personnel be made aware of changes, so as student safety will not be jeopardized. Students simply can not be released to other destinations without the consent of the parent/guardian.
*Parents are required to sign in upon entering the building and sign out when leaving during regular school hours. The sign in book is housed in the office. There will be a parent area designated in the foyer. Parents are requested to wait in this area for their child.*
Use of the Office Telephone
As you are aware, the office telephones are for business use and are in constant demand. Students may use the telephone, for special circumstance when they have the teacher’s permission and only under the supervision of school staff. We can not allow the telephones to be used for leisure calls but only for necessity. We, as a staff, thank you for your understanding and cooperation with this request.
Proper Dress for School
Again, as you are aware, children are expected to arrive at school appropriately dressed. This, of course, means that the students dress for the weather conditions, as, unless it is extremely cold or it is raining, children are expected to go outdoors before school, at recess and at lunchtime due to supervision concerns affecting all our students. Children are also asked to wear clothing that is free of offensive words, slogans, or graphics. As a courtesy, we ask that caps and head coverings, except those worn under special circumstances, be removed as students enter the building. Children must also change their shoes (footwear) after entering the building, so they would have to have indoor footwear. As always, we thank you for your cooperation.
Student Evaluation /Parent-Teacher Conferences/Parent Involvement
Parent/Guardian involvement is one of the biggest issues in education today and with good reason. Study after study makes it clear that parents impact on a child’s school success in far greater ways than most of us suspect. We do realize that many parents work, and the time they have to help their children might be limited. However, it is no exaggeration to say that the potential for success in school increases significantly with solid parent/guardian involvement at home. It is with this in mind that we encourage parents/guardians to be active in their child’s education. Homework allows children an opportunity to develop independent work and study habits. Most nights your child will have assigned homework to complete. If this practice is to be of benefit, it is essential that parents check to ensure that all tasks are completed as requested.
Communication
As has always been the case at Riverside Elementary, two-way communication with parents/guardians is encouraged and as such parents are very welcome in our school. Each September, parents/guardians will receive Riverside Elementary’s Communication Plan/School Profile, sent home from the school administration. We ask that you save this information for future reference through the course of the school year.
Early in the school year, an individual classroom Communication Plan will be sent home , with all students, from the classroom teacher. There will also be an assortment of information memos sent home, with all students, very regularly throughout the year, regarding day-to-day matters. Communication will also be done through texting and emails. As always, an open-door policy remains as your invitation to get involved in your child’s education.
Inclement Weather
All parents/guardians are requested to make alternate arrangements for their child/children, should this be necessary, in case school is cancelled during the day for any reason (water shortage, power failure, storm, etc.). It is important that your child know where to go if you are not at home.
Student Activities & Special Events
Children at Riverside will enjoy a variety of activities and special events through the course of their school year, from sports and recreation to co-curricular activities. As we move forward we’ll establish our school teams, clubs, committees, field trips, etc.. Information as to specifics will follow as we attempt to involve our children and our community in school endeavors.
Information Sheets
In case of rare emergencies, school staff must be prepared especially if parents/guardians cannot be contacted. Please complete the attached information sheet and return it to your child’s classroom teacher as soon as possible.
Cafeteria Service
The cafeteria service will continue for all students, Grades P-8. Updated information and menu will be sent home as soon as possible. Cost per meal varies. Please see School Cafeteria Menu. Can be paid for via School Cash Online.
*Kids First* After School Program
To assist with the challenge of finding adequate accommodation for their children once school classes have been dismissed for the day, and to perhaps address a critical need of working parents/guardians in our rural school setting, Riverside Elementary will continue to offer its program of wellness, recreation and fitness, after school each day, at this facility. This anticipated program will be an extension and outgrowth of our extra-curricular program and hopefully will offer a variety of after-school activities throughout the school year that will provide a broad range of opportunities for the children/students of Riverside Elementary after school on a daily basis. The activities and opportunities, in a small part, may be outgrowths of instructionally driven programs, but all aspects of this program are clearly designed as fun for the children, through activities of wellness and recreation. Children, for the most part, will be offered a range of experiences that emphasize social, emotional and character growth in the context of an enjoyable extra-curricular program.
Costs: Daily $15.00/child. (This cost for the current year will again be based upon participation, and we hope and will attempt to keep the price at this very reasonable level.)

Please note that this program is a school affiliated program, an extension of our school based extra-curricular program, and as such, will be under the direction of the school administration.
****Our focus at Riverside Elementary is one which will keeps the child at the center of the curriculum and at the center of the school experience. We do encourage you to be active in your child’s education as the potential for success in school increases significantly with solid parent/guardian involvement. It is our hope that you will support our efforts and that you will be patient as we enter a new school year in this wonderful educational setting.****
