Mathematics 12 Academic Halifax West High School

Prerequisite: Successful completion of Mathematics 11 or Pre-Calculus 11.

Textbook: Foundations of Mathematics 12 (Nelson)

Description: Mathematics 12 is designed to provide students with the mathematical understandings and critical-thinking skills identified for post-secondary studies in programs that do not require the study of theoretical calculus. Students who select Mathematics 12 should have a solid understanding of the Mathematics 11 curriculum. Students in Mathematics 12 will study the following topics: borrowing money, investing money, set theory and logical reasoning, counting methods, probability, polynomial functions, exponential and logarithmic functions and sinusoidal functions.

Necessary Materials: Students are expected to bring the following materials to calss everyday: Textbook, scientific calculator, binder with loose leaf and a pencil.

12% UNIT 1 -Set Theory (Chapter 3) (15% of Term Mark)

16% UNIT 2 - Counting and Probability (Chapters 4, 5) (20% of Term Mark)

32% UNIT 3 - Relations and Functions (Chapters 6, 7, 8) (40% of Term Mark)

20% UNIT 4 - Finance (Chapters 1, 2) (25% of Term Mark)

ASSESSMENT:

Exam:

The exam will be based on the entire semester and is worth 20% of the final grade.

The exam will be written in January.

Tests:

Tests are major assessments and will be announced several days in advance.

Expect tests to be cumulative throughout the year.

Quizzes:

Quizzes provide opportunities to assess ongoing progress.

Quizzes are generally short and will be announced in advance.

Assignments:

Assignments will be given and graded on a regular basis. They may be individual. Students can use one page of written notes (not printed or photocopied) during this type of informal assessment which is to be submitted with their assessment.

Comprehension Checks (Homework Probes):

Comprehension Checks are unannounced short evaluations based on recent work. Only class notes are permitted.

Students must be sure to keep up with their work on a daily basis.


Note: Marks throughout the semester will adhere to these proportions:

Formal (Tests and Quizzes) 50%

Informal (Assignments and Comprehension Checks) 50%

Marks in PowerSchool will be updated at least once per month at the end of each month.

If you are absent from class, it is your responsibility to catch up on any missed work.

Check the google classroom, ask classmates for notes, and see your teacher to get any handouts.
