MCHS TECHNOLOGY

Memorial Composite High School expects all community members to act with a high degree of individual integrity in the ethical and responsible use of technology throughout our building. To maintain our safe and respectful environment, community members agree to use all technology equipment — including school-issued computer hardware and software, internet access, pc’s, laptops and electronic devices - in a safe, respectful and appropriate manner for academic purposes only.

The use of MCHS electronic equipment is a privilege, which may be revoked at any time. Abusive or inappropriate behavior will be addressed based on a continuum of consequences that may include revocation of this privilege. Despite the best efforts of filtering software, it is impossible for MCHS to make a guarantee of absolute security when using technology. To this end, we depend on faculty and students to monitor access and use. The use of social networking websites, personal student email accounts, instant messaging, web journals, peer-to-peer networks, blogs, and chat rooms must be specifically permitted by a faculty member and for academic purposes only. Use of these electronic resources is never permitted on school grounds for nonacademic use. This policy applies to all student electronic devices that allow personal communication with others while in school.

Cell Phones are not to be used during the school day.

If a student has a matter that requires contacting a parent they must do so under the supervision and with the permission of a staff member using a land line. Cell phones may be used on school grounds before entering or after leaving the building. They are not to be used inside the buildings at any time without the expressed permission of a teacher or staff member. Any staff who witnesses a student using a cell phone, having it on or in plain sight will confiscate the phone. First offenders retrieve the phone from the office at the end of the day. Subsequent offences require a parent/guardian to retrieve them. This is in compliance with the CBVRSB police PSS#258.

If a student has a cell phone it must be turned completely off (not just to silent), and it must be hidden from sight. MCHS is not responsible for lost or stolen cell phones or other electronic devices.

While the previous list covers many aspects of school life and behaviours it is not meant to be exhaustive or complete and the administration reserves the right to determine what behaviours/conduct may be detrimental to the effective management of the learning environment on both a classroom and school-wide level. Actions of a more serious nature i.e. weapons, vandalism, racial misconduct, sexual harassment/assault, etc. may also warrant the referral to local police services.

Communication, and respect for others. All community members are expected to act with consideration toward others and to behave in a responsible manner at all times. Bullying behavior through the use of student electronic communication (cyber bullying), will not be tolerated. Deleting or tampering with someone else’s files, as well as any unauthorized, deliberate action that damages or disrupts our equipment including the network, is prohibited. In those cases where specific laws have been violated, police personnel may become involved.
