Eligibility
Your child may participate in this study if he or she is receiving treatment with a penicillin or cephalosporin class antibiotic for 10 days for a respiratory infection and is between the ages of 3 and 12 years.
Participants may be eligible if:
Child is between ages 3 and 12 years.
Caregiver has the ability to read, speak, and write English or Spanish.
Household has refrigerator and freezer for proper storage of yogurt and samples.
Household has telephone access.
Child is enrolled within 24 hours of starting antibiotics.
Child is receiving outpatient treatment (not in a hospital).
Child is treated with a penicillin or cephalosporin class antibiotic for 10 days for a respiratory infection (for example, strep throat, otitis media/ear infection, sinus infection, cold).
Participating children will need to:
Be willing to drink 4-ounces (1/2 cup) of strawberry-flavored yogurt once a day for 10 days.
Provide 5 stool samples throughout the study.
You as a parent/caregiver of the participant will need to:
Be available to speak with study staff on the phone 4 times for about 5 minutes each.
Agree to keep a daily diary describing your child’s health for 14 days.
