Classroom Management

The second graders at Brookwood are the role models for many younger students in the school. As such, I expect a lot out of my students in terms of their behaviors - they have a lot of responsibility being some of the older kids in the school! With that being said, I am also very clear about setting expectations, following through with those expectations, and being fair.

The beginning of the year will consist of a lot of discussion about second grade expectations, and students will know from the get-go exactly what is expected of them. We will use a classroom clip chart to help students track their behavior throughout the day, and hold them accountable for making positive choices.

Parent Communication

Parent communication is of high value to me. I believe it is crucial to maintain communication between home and school in order to ensure a positive learning experience for students. This year I will make use of several tools to help keep you connected with our classroom.

Our classroom website and Facebook page will be the two primary tools I will utilize to help keep families updated about what's happening in our classroom. The website will serve more as an informational tool, where you can access documents, calendars, links, and basic information about myself, our classroom, and the curriculum. Our class Facebook page will serve more as a newsletter with regular updates about the day-to-day happenings in our classroom.

Homework Policy

I know that second graders work very hard during the school day, so I don't believe in assigning a lot of homework for students to do outside of school. Students will typically have about 20-30 minutes of homework per night, which will mostly consist of reading and spelling.

Reading at Home

Daily reading homework will be the bulk of the students' "assigned" work each night. Students should typically spend at least 20 minutes outside of school reading a book of their choosing. Students will also be asked to keep track of their reading homework on their reading logs.

It is so important for students to spend this time outside of school reading! Feel free to read with them, listen to them read, or ask them questions about their reading.
