Here are some ideas for helping your child have a successful third grade year:
Reading:
Ask your child specific questions about what they read.
Encourage your child to read, then write, then talk about nonfiction text such as newspapers, magazines, and biographies.
Have them follow step by step instructions or a set of directions such as a recipe, directions for a game, or directions for building something. (ex. legos)
Encourage them to choose books to read about topics they are interested in. Or, find a series that they enjoy such as Judy Moody, or Magic Tree House.
Math:
Help your third grader practice their addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division facts.
Encourage your child to illustrate the math they were thinking in their head and then have them discuss it out loud. Ask questions like, "What were you thinking?" "How did you think about that?"
Encourage them to keep trying while solving problems. Don't give them the answers-ask them to think of different ways they can solve the problem.
Have them apply their math knowledge to a real-world scenario such as doubling a recipe or figuring out how much change they will get back after a purchase.
You can help your child succeed by...
staying involved, informed and engaged
read with your child
review and discuss their homework
communicate with their teachers
attend meetings
look through your child's binder/book bag every day.
