Parent meeting for Wrestling is Wednesday Nov. 19th in the BSH Commons.
Wrestling is a Winter Sport. We are a highly competitive Men's and Women's Wrestling Program. Both Men's and Women's wrestling at Bend High are consistently Top-8 programs in the State. Wrestling is an OSAA sport and is a popular college sport in all divisions.
Specific information about practice times & weekly agendas is posted on our "Wrestler information" link (go back to homepage).
If you are brand new to the sport of wrestling then we recommend you start practice when the "season" starts in November. However, we will invite anyone to join us for pre-season lifting and morning "skills and drills" starting the first week of October.
Welcome,
What equipment does my athlete need? Answer--> You will need to purchase wrestling shoes. Wrestling knee pads are advised but not required. Clean practice/workout gear everyday. Workout gear means shorts (no zipper and no buttons) and T-shirt or sweat-shirt. The struggle to keep up on laundry will be real! Purchasing Wrestling Shoes can be done online through various vendors. Dick's Sporting goods and Big-5 sporting goods both, usually, have wrestling shoes in stock.
Head gear? Answer--> Wrestling head-gear is required during competition and we will therefore require kids to wear it during practice. We will provide (check-out) head-gear to our athletes. However, it is okay for athletes to use their own personal head-gear.
Showering? Answer--> taking a cleansing shower with quality soap immediately after practice is crucial for your personal health and sanitation. It is highly recommended that students bring a clean towel to school and shower at school immediately after practice. Our Staff will not "make" kids shower at school. Therefore, athletes choosing not to shower at school should shower as soon as possible when they get home.
Hair/Nails/shaving --> finger nails must stay trimmed (yes girls too), trimmed finger nails are a non-negotiable. Long hair should be secured in a manner so that it is not coming down in front of an athletes face. If an athletes hair is a distraction (like kids are getting out of position to move hair) then that hair is a problem and you need to consider getting it cut. Girls are no longer required to wear "hair-covers". Hair should be secured within head-gear or tied back in a manner that it is not in the face or interfering with wrestling. It is recommended that beards & sideburns be trimmed. "Abrasive" facial hair is not allowed. Exception is that kids may have a mustache that does not go below lip-line.
Braces!?--> Braces must be covered with a mouth guard during competition! It is non-negotiable that during competition students have a mouth guard that covers braces. I would recommend asking/working with your orthodontist to get a mouth guard. Top and bottom braces must be covered. I recommend that our athletes wear the mouth guard during practice so they get used to it.
Fundraising & "Gear Points"? --> We ask our athletes to participate in fundraising events in order to compensate the program and themselves for the huge cost of purchasing a uniform for 50+ kids and the huge cost of travel. The more a student athlete participates in fundraising activities, the less you/student pays for their uniform. The price of the uniform/personal gear order is__________________. Please show up and help at fundraising events. Purchasing this gear/uniform package is a requirement of the program. If an athlete recieves their uniform package, and then later quites the team, we do not take the uniform back or offer any type of refund for the uniform package. The uniform package is the property of the student athlete once received.
-It is likely that any athlete that travels to a tournament that requires a hotel stay, will be asked to pay a portion of their hotel stay regardless of fundraising participation.
Transportation? Transportation will continue to be a struggle and moving target!! Your patience is appreciated when we are not sure of transportation.
-Our Coaches have worked hard to become "Type-20" certified (activity bus). We will leverage coaches driving these short busses frequently.
-Parent, or "find your own ride" transportation will many times occur during week-day competition. Each week we will work with our schedule, athletic office and transportation to determine if we will be able to provide a bus or if the event will be "find your own ride."
-Any event that is within the City of Bend will always be "find your own ride" status unless otherwise stated.
-We are trying to find ways to facilitate coaches becoming Type-20 vehicle certified (Type-20= "short bus").
What is "hydration testing and weight certifying"? --> This is the process used at every school in state of Oregon to determine a healthy weight-class assessment for our athletes. This process attempts to eliminate what some people refer to as "cutting weight".
Hydration testing and weight certification involves testing the urine of an athlete to determine if they are hydrated at the time of the test. If they pass the hydration portion of the test they are then weighed and body fat tested by a special scale. The student's weight at time of certification, body fat % and height are incorporated to create a safe weight-loss plan for that athlete and determine "eligible weight classes" each week for the athlete.
How do I pass the hydration test? Students should be eating healthy and drinking plenty of water (water only!) preceding the test day and on test day. Eliminate salty unhealthy foods and drinking adequate amounts of water are the simplest ways to pass the hydration test. Athletes should not need to drink an exceptional amount of water to pass. One of the biggest reason kids fail the hydration test is not due to dehydration but because of a terrible, salt-filled diet that saturates the liquids of their body.
