I am an Associate Professor of Hearing, Speech, and Language Sciences at Gallaudet University.
I am interested in just about anything having to do with how children and adults perceive and process prosody. Prosody is the rhythmic and melodic aspects of speech, and it includes things like stress and intonation. My current projects include:
How do monolingual and bilingual children develop prosody? (with Nahar Albudoor)
Do prosodic skills predict language comprehension in individuals with intellectual disabilities? (with Susan Loveall)
What prosodic cues do listeners with cochlear implants and normal hearing use to identify a talker's emotions?
How does prosody/use of non-manual markers develop in deaf children with autism who use American Sign Language?
How can we improve voice recognition technology for deaf talkers? (with Raja Kushalnagar, as part of the Speech Accessibility Project)
