Each week, students will bring home a new list of spelling words to study. The list of words will follow a different spelling pattern each week. Learning the spelling pattern will help students study the words on the list and gain confidence in spelling unfamiliar words in the future. Students will learn about the spelling pattern at school, but we always recommend discussing it at home to support their learning. There are excellent videos to reference as needed on their ELAR teachers' Google Classroom.
The following are some activities that can be done at home to help your student study throughout the week:
Spelling Training
Use the Spelling Training website to practice typing the words.
Color Code
Write each word, but use this code:
Vowels = Blue
Consonants = Red
Picture Perfect
Write each word then draw a quick picture that reminds you of each word.
ABC Order
Write the words in alphabetical order.
Sensory Spelling
1. Write the words in sand or shaving cream.
2. Clap your hands or do a jumping jack for each letter as you spell the words aloud.
Rainbow Writing
Write each word in 5 colors.

Word Sorts
1. Sort the words by number of letters.
2. Sort the words by the number of syllables.
3. Sort the words into rhyming groups. You may need one group of words that do not rhyme with any others.
