MELBOURNE WILL HONOR WAR HERO

Body of Frank B. Huddleston Will Arrive Here From France Sunday Night – Military Funeral Thursday

The earthly remains of a Melbourne boy who gave his life on the battlefield in France arrived at Hoboken, New York last week and they will be accompanied by one of his "buddies" who served with him in France. It was due to the request of this friend that the boy of Frank B. Huddleston was held at Hoboken until he could arrange to leave with it on the 2nd or 3rd. If the start is made on the 2nd, he will probably arrive here on No. 86 Saturday night, otherwise on Sunday night. Huddleston was killed in the Argonne Forrest about June 18th, 1918, and the people of France would have been glad to look after his grave, as they do the graves of all American heroes who fell in the great world war, but the mother wanted him near so that she could with her own hands strew flowers on his grave, here in the country he died for. But others will see to it that the last resting place of this brave Melbourne boy is kept green long after his mother is laid beside him. America does not forget her soldier dead. Frank B. Huddleston was the son of Mrs. A. B. Myles, through whose efforts his remains have been returned to her by the government. He will be buried in the Melbourne Cemetery next Thursday afternoon with military honors, the newly organized Frank Huddleston post of the American Legion in charge of the ceremonies. It is expected that a large number of ex-servicemen from other town in the county will be in attendance. Frank was one of the two boys from Brevard County who were killed in action, both from Melbourne. The other boy was Eli Light, who was killed in April the same year.

About U.S. World War I Mothers' Pilgrimage, 1930

Listing of mothers and widows of World War One soldiers who are interred in European cemeteries.In the late 1920s the War Department of the United States compiled a list of mothers and widows of deceased soldiers killed in World War I and offered to send them to their loved one's final resting place in Europe. This database contains the names those women who were entitled to make the pilgrimage, as shown by department records on 15 November 1929. Each record provides the name of widow or mother, city and state of residence, and relationship to the deceased. Additionally, information regarding the decedent's name, rank, unit, and cemetery is provided. In a few cases the woman's surname and decedent's surname can be different, most likely due to an error in spelling in the original document. Providing information regarding nearly 11,000 mothers and widows, this database can be useful for seeking information on World War I veterans.

Two columns indicated whether the woman desired to make the pilgrimage in 1930 or "later." If the individual chose to travel after 1930, it was in 1931, 1932, or 1933. If an "x" appears in either of these columns, the person, although eligible, did not state whether they desired to make the pilgrimage or not.
