Obituary
Military honors at graveside will be performed Tuesday at 4 p.m. at Fountainhead Memorial Park, Palm Bay for Warrant Officer Paul Lloyd Berry, U.S. Army.
Berry, 21, of 7917 Henry Ave., West Melbourne died Jan 10, in a helicopter crash in Vietnam. He came to South Brevard in 1964 from Delaware. Prior to military service, he attended Brevard Junior College and Stetson University.
Services will be conducted at Brownlie Funeral Chapel with Bishop Keith D. Chapman officiating.
Berry is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd M. Berry, a brother Randy and sister Debbie of West Melbourne.
Friends may call at the Funeral home, 210 Palmetto Ave., Melbourne, Monday from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Services for Pfc. James Homer Brady, 21 of 829 Maderine St. Merritt Island, will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Messiah Evangelical Lutheran Church in Cocoa.
Survivors include his parents Mr. and Mrs. James H. Brady of Merritt Island and one brother, David Mark Brady, Merritt Island.
Wylie-Baxley Funeral Home in Cocoa is in charge of the arrangements.

Obituary
Full military honor services for Pfc. Aubrey Brown, 18, a Cocoa serviceman killed in Vietnam last week will be held at 2 p.m. Friday in the Brevard Chapel.
Brown was killed Friday by the explosion of a Viet Cong land mine.
Chaplain Henry Quates of Patrick AFB will officiate,. A military guard from Fort Stewart, GA, will also participate.
Burial will be in the veterans section of Brevard Memorial Park cemetery.
Brown was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Jesse D. Brown, 308 Prospect St. Cocoa. His death brought to seven the number of Brevard County servicemen killed in the Vietnam war.
The youth attended Clearlake junior High and Cocoa High Schools where he was a member of art and drams club. He is survived by his parents and sister Rebecca, 15.
An ironic incident to Brown’s death occurred Friday when a thief apparently burglarized his mother’s purse containing the last five post cards her son had written from Asia.

Obituary
A Catholic memorial service for Norman D. Brown, 29, 1605 Seminole Ave., who was killed in Vietnam, will be held at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the chapel at Patrick AFB.
Brown was killed while on patrol June 6. He was a native of Monticello, Ill., and moved to South Brevard six years ago. He has been in the Marine Corps six years and in the Army almost three years.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Antoinette Brown; son Patrick, Melbourne; two brothers, David L., West Melbourne, and Gary V. Brown, Alaska; and his parents Mr. and Mrs. Vern Brown; and a sister Mrs. Marian Gladbury, all of Monticello.
Burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Va.

Paul Clark Services Wednesday
Services for Paul Franklin Clark, 23, 1646 Virginia Dr., Eau Gallie, will be conducted at St. Paul’s Methodist Church of Eau Gallie Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. by the Rev. James S. Farr, assisted by Rev. J. Robert Miller.
Clark, an Army Spec.4 who was killed in action in Vietnam Feb. 23, will be buried in Florida Memorial Gardens.
He was a graduate of the class of 1963 at Melbourne High and attended Brevard Junior College and received a degree in business administration in 1968 from the University of Florida.
He was a member of the Methodist faith, American Legion Post 163 of Eau Gallie and while at Melbourne High, Clark was active in student government, the Wheel club and the track team. He was also a swimming instructor for the South Brevard YMCA.
Suvivors include his father , Wendell Clark in Washington; his mother, Mrs. Beryl Cook of Eau Gallie; two brothers, James C., a student of University of Florida and Carl S. Clark, in the U.S. Marines; a sister, Mrs. Wendy McGowan of Eau Gallie, and grandparents in New Hampshire and Gainsville.
Friends may call at the Davis Funeral Home Tuesday, 2-9 p.m. Donations in lieu of flowers may be sent to the Paul F. Clark Memorial Fund at First National Bank of Eau Gallie.

Remembering The draft and Paul Franklin Clark, Friend and Soldier

Paul Clark taught me to swim at the Eau Gallie YMCA.
I was just a kid, maybe seven years old.
In my mind’s eye, I see Paul tanned, hair bleached Florida blonde, with an easy smile, often flashed to reassure nervous young moms seated poolside, that yes, he could bob and float their kids to personal water safety.
Paul was a natural born kid magnet.
During free swim afternoons, when neighborhood kids hit the pool to escape the brutal heat, the teenager met us at the gate, greeting each of us by name.
But if caught running on the slippery concrete pool deck, one shrill blast of the whistle from Paul would screech a kid to an instant halt.
Summers came and went. Tadpoles became minnows and before too long, Paul’s kids evolved into adept swimmers.
YMCA swim patches sewn to our suits delineated the ranks to Swim Hall of Fame accomplishment-Fish, Flying Fish, Shark and Porpoise.
The truly motivated aspired to Junior Lifeguard and with passage of the class, dived into the ultimate swim status for a kid, Senior Lifeguard, the level that with successful completion graduated a new generation of Pauls.
Paul was still around.
We caught his wave and hello every now and then, but his sighting grew less frequent around the Y.
One day we heard Paul was headed for Vietnam.
He lasted two months.
Paul died Feb. 23, 1969 at Binh Duong, South Vietnam.
Ground casualty, small arms fire.
His body was recovered and shipped home.
Paul Franklin Clark was 23 years old.
I visited the Vietnam War Memorial many years ago in search of Paul. As I ran my fingers across his name etched into the black marble, I remember the confident grin of the young man from so many years ago.
The water splashes, the smell of chlorine tickles my nose and Paul’s whistle blasts once more, demanding attention.
Stop before you hurt yourself.
U.S. Rep. Charles Rangel’s proposal to regarding reinstatement of the military draft blasts my mental whistle.
His views that Congress would be less likely to send young people to war if their own kids had to serve simply holds no water.
I recall "deferment" back in the day.
College students were typical of those who took advantage of deferment.
If a young man was unlucky enough to have his birthday drawn early in the Vietnam draft lottery and unable to claim deferment, with almost certainty that meant he was headed out.
Of course, politicians pulled strings for their own kids.
If you have the dough, you don’t have to go.
Such unspoken "policy" would certainly resume with a reinstated draft.
Our local YMCA closed many years ago. The main building is now the home to various businesses.
The pool remains on the grounds, cloaked from view by years of Florida scrub gone wild, tangled and woven through the bowed chain link.
Only those who swam their 1960s summers away know the pool is even still there.
Out by the front gate, hidden in the weeds, lies a small concrete marker, a tribute to Paul Clark and his service to the YMCA.
We will never forget.

Obituary
Funeral Services for Marine Lance Cpl. William Stephen Clark, 21, of Eau Gallie, who was killed in Vietnam, will be held at Harbor City Baptist Church at 2 p.m. Saturday with Rev. Jim Wade officiating.
Clark was killed near Da Nang on July 28. Burial will be in Eau Gallie Cemetery with the U.S. Marine Corps providing military honors at graveside.
Clark , on his second tour of duty in Vietnam, had earned a Presidential Citation, the Purple Heart and 21 air medals.
He is survived by his parents, Eau Gallie Councilman and Mrs. Bill D. Clark; two sisters, Nancy Clark and Dee Clark, all of Eau Gallie.

Funeral services for Army Sgt. Steven Travis Cummins of Eau Gallie, who was killed in Vietnam July 12, will be held at Brownlie Funeral Home Chapel in Melbourne Tuesday at 4 p.m.
Burial will follow in Brevard Memorial Park with the Rev. W.T. Jones conducting the service.
Sgt. Cummins, who was a native of Vincennes, Ind. was graduated from Eau Gallie High School in 1966.
Surviving are his wife, Kathryn of Eau Gallie; his parents Mr. and Mrs. Travis Cummins of Eau Gallie; a sister Mrs. Georgann Troglin of Eau Gallie; a sister, Miss Robin Cummins of Eau Gallie; and grandmother, Mrs. Anna Adkerson of Merritt Island.

Obituary
Services for Kenneth Keith Epley, 20, 351 Coral Reef Dr., Satellite Beach, will be conducted at United Methodist Church of Satellite Beach at 10:30 a.m. Thursday by Rev. Leroy p. Gwaltway.
U.S. Army Spec. 4 Epley died April 28 while stationed in the Mekong Delta area in Vietnam. He was found dead in bed. Results of an autopsy have not been received.
A native of Asheville, N.C. he came to Satellite Beach in 1960 from Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. He was a 1967 graduate of Satellite Beach High School and was active on the school baseball team. He was attending Brevard Junior College when he was inducted into the Army in February 1968.
He was a member of the United Methodist Church of Satellite Beach.
Survivors include his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. Kenneth Epley, Satellite Beach; brother Kirk L. Epley, Satellite Beach; sister Mrs. Ginger Bourgeois, Merritt Island, and grandparents in Asheville, N.C.

Obituary
Funeral services for Marine Corporal Michael O. Glenn, 19, will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday at the Brownlie Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Joseph E. Falkner officiating. Burial will be at Melbourne Cemetery, where members of the Marine Corps will furnish military honors at the graveside.
Corporal Glenn sustained wounds Jan 12 while on patrol near Quang Nam, Vietnam. He died Jan 16 in a Saigon hospital.
He attended Southwest Junior High and Melbourne High School before joining the Marines in November, 1965. He was sent to Vietnam last April.
A native of Virginia, Corporal Glenn was active in Little League, Pony League, and City league sports here before enlisting.
Surviving are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph C. Glenn Sr. of 134 Michigan Ave., Indialantic. He also leaves five brothers, Joseph, Harold, Richard, Ronald, and Kevin, all at home. Also surviving are an uncle, Leon F. Fesperman of Melbourne Beach, and his fiancée, Miss Martha Clarke of West Melbourne.

Greeson , 19, 136 Gray Rd., West Melbourne, was killed last week in Vietnam.
He came to South Brevard in 1962 from Burlington, N.C. and was a member of the Methodist Church.
He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Greeson, two brothers Charles and Lewis, and two sisters, Patricia and Brenda, all of West Melbourne.

Obituary
John Jacob Gunther, 20, killed in Vietnam, will be buried Saturday in Florida Memorial Gardens with full military honors furnished by army personal from Fort Stewart, Ga.
Gunther, 7661 N. Northwest Oak St., Melbourne, was a paratrooper with the 173rd Airborne.
Mass will be said at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church at 10 a.m.
Saturday with the Rev. Peter C. Dolan officiating.
Gunther was a member of the church, a graduate of Melbourne High School, class of 1965, and enlisted in the Army a month after graduation.
He attained the rank of sergeant.
Gunther is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jacob J. Gunther, brothers William and Gerard and sister Miss Marie Gunther, all at home.
Friends will be received at Brownlie Funeral Home Thursday and Friday from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.

A formal military funeral for a Brevard youth who was killed in action in Vietnam will be conducted at 1 p.m. Sunday at Edison, Ga.
The youth, Elijah Ingram, 20 died from wounds he received in an enemy attack on an American landing zone in South Vietnam.
The son of Mrs. Louise Whisonant, 120 Factory Road, Cocoa, Ingram was a 1967 graduate of Monroe High School in Cocoa. He had lived in Cocoa 10 years, coming from Edison.

Services for Army Cpl. Robert Eugene Mackey, 30, of Cocoa, who was killed in Vietnam Sept.7, will be held at 2 p.m.. Monday at the Garden Chapel Funeral Home, Orlando.
Cpl. Mackey, of 316 Pine Ave, was a resident of Cocoa 18 years. He was employed by IBM at Cape Kennedy before going in the Army.
Cpl. Richard Doss of Cocoa has been granted special leave to act as escort from Dover Air Force Base, Delaware, to McCoy Air Force Base, Orlando.
Burial will be in Florida Memorial Gardens, south of Rockledge.
Cpl. Mackey was born in Astabula, Ohio. A graduate of Fletcher Academy, Fletcher, N.C., he was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church.
Survivors include his mother, Mrs. Genvieve A. Mackey, Orlando; father Robert J. Mackey, Cocoa; maternal grandfather George Smith in Geneva, Ohio; a brother, Ronald A. Mackey of Orlando; sisters, Dorthy L. Mackey of Orlando and Mrs. Ben (Dito) Thomas, of St. Petersburg.

Matthews, 22, of 305 Neetile Blvd., Merritt Island, was killed Oct. 23 while serving in Vietnam.
He is survived by his parents Mr. and Mrs. Seth Matthews Jr., one brother, Marc D., all of Merritt Island, and one sister, Mrs. Annice Ellis, of Dallas Tex.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 2-4p.m Sunday and from 7-9 p.m. Monday. Burial will be at Florida Memorial Gardens with military graveside services.

Betty Niedermeyer, after less than a month of marriage, waved goodbye to her soldier husband last October. Friday, the Army reported the 23 year old private from Eau Gallie was killed in action. Niedermeyer was killed in heavy fighting in the Mekong Delta area.
He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Niedermeyer.
His mother has been a city clerk of Eau Gallie for 16 years.
The flag at City Hall will be flown at half-staff for a week in honor of the Melbourne High graduate.
His wife has been living with the Niedermeyers since her husband left for Vietnam.

PFC James E. Pettijohn, 19, U.S. Marines Corps, son of Mr. and Mrs. Newton S. Pettijohn Jr. of 390 Poinciana Drive Eau Gallie, died aboard the U.S. Naval Hospital Ship USS Repose on Oct. 19, the Defense Department has announced.
He had enlisted in the Marine Corps and went on active duty in December 1968.
He was a graduate of Eau Gallie High School in 1968 and had attended Brevard Junior College for one year prior to his enlistment.
Surviving, in addition to his parents, are three sisters, Mrs. Janice Toothman, Eau Gallie, Mrs. Jane Szlist, Melbourne, and Mrs. Jackie Gloger, Lee Hall, Va.; grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Newton S. Pettijohn Sr., Flora Park and Mr. and Mrs. Earl Trember, Eau Gallie.
Funeral services are incomplete and will be announced at a later date by Davis Funeral Home of Eau Gallie.

Funeral services for Pfc. Mark Sater, U.S. Marine Corps, of 1966 Adams St., Eau Gallie, will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Emanual United Methodist Church of Eau Gallie, by the Rev. Oliver F. Tayleo and Rev. H.W. Parker.
The USMC will furnish graveside military honors at Fountainhead Memorial Park.
Pfc. Sater was killed in action in South Vietnam Aug 10. He enlisted in the Marines Corps in September 1968 and had been in Vietnam, for two months.
A native of Toledo, Ohio he came to Eau Gallie in 1959. He was a member of the Emanuel Methodist Church and past president of the Methodist Youth Fellowship.
He was graduated from Eau Gallie High School in 1968, where he had been active in football, Key Club, Junior Exchange, and many other school activities.
Surviving are his parents Mr. and Mrs. W. A. "Bill" Sater, Eau Gallie, four brothers, Randy K., Brain, Bradley N. and Douglas A. Sater, all of Eau Gallie; a sister Miss Dawn A. Sater, Eau Gallie; grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Ernest G. Kupfer, Venice, and Mrs. Doris Sater of Bradenton.

Obituary
Services for Brent John Tosh, 22, who was killed in action in Vietnam, Feb. 15 will be held Thursday at 3 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Cocoa. Dr. Virgil B. Gardner, pastor will officiate assisted by Chaplain Walter H. Mattison of Patrick Air Force Base.
Burial will be in Brevard Memorial Park with military honors.
Sgt. Tosh of 3932 West Ridgewood, Cocoa, has been a resident of Brevard for 10 years. Born in Norwich, England he is a graduate of Cocoa High School.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Janice M. Tosh, Cocoa, his parents Mr. and Mrs. Delbert Tosh of Cocoa, maternal grandmother, Mrs. Florence Daynes in England and paternal grandmother, Mrs. Essie Tosh of Dequeen, Ark.

Services for Pvt. Malcolm R. True, 21, son of Mr. and Mrs. Malcolm True, Sr. 1316 Donna Ave, Cocoa, who died Dec 21, in South Vietnam, will be at 2 p.m. Friday at St. Lukes Cemetery at Courtney, North Merritt Island.
Full military graveside services will be performed.

Services for Pfc. James A. Walker Jr., 20 of 354 Palm Ave., Cocoa, will be conducted at 3 p.m. Wednesday at the Clearlake Baptist Church by Rev. Hugh Beasley.
Walker was killed March 21 in Vietnam.
He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. James A. Walker Sr.; brother Mark; and sisters Sephanie, Lisa and Sarette, all of Cocoa.

Funeral services for Frederick L. Walters, killed in action in Vietnam, will be held at 11 a. m., Wednesday with Chaplain William H. Warren officiating at the Davis Funeral Home of Eau Gallie. Burial will be in Florida Memorial Gardens with the Ft. Stewart, GA Army personnel providing military honors. Cpl. Walters, 20, died May 13. A native of Wiesbaden, Germany he came to Eau Gallie 16 years ago, where he was graduated from Eau Gallie High School. He lived at 201 Harbor City Blvd, Indian Harbour Beach.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Joyce A. Walters of Indian Harbour Beach, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frederick W. Walters of Melbourne and two sisters, Mrs. Lee Austin of Eau Gallie and Mrs. Wally Robinson of Melbourne.

Obituary
Army SP 4 Richard M. Waterbury, 23, a war casualty in Vietnam, will be buried in Melbourne Cemetery on Monday. He was killed last Saturday.
Military honors will be presented at graveside by Air Force and Army personnel stationed at Patrick AFB, after services at 2 p.m. at Brownlie Funeral Home, Melbourne.
The soldier attended Melbourne High School and finished at Florida Military Academy, Deland. He was a member of the Eau Gallie Jaycees.
His family came to South Brevard from Chicago, Ill in 1950.
Surviving are his parents and two brothers, Donald L. and Robert E. Waterbury.
Friends may call Saturday and Sunday at the funeral home from 5 to 9 p.m.
