At First Steps, the health, safety, and wellbeing of our children has always been our highest priority. In recent years, we've experienced increasingly high summer temperatures, and this year's extreme heat has highlighted just how urgently we need to adapt our environment.

Our building was never designed to cope with prolonged periods of high temperatures. During the hottest days, we've had to introduce special measures to keep children safe, including limiting outdoor activities, changing daily routines, and, making the difficult decision to close our doors because the indoor temperatures were simply too high for young children.

Climate experts predict that hotter summers are becoming the new normal, meaning this is no longer a one-off problem. We need a long-term solution.

We're raising funds to install air conditioning units in our nursery to create a safe, cool, and comfortable environment where children can learn, play, and thrive, even during heatwaves.

These units will help us:

• Keep nursery rooms at safe temperatures

• Reduce the risk of heat-related illness.

• Avoid unnecessary closures caused by extreme heat.

• Ensure children can continue learning and playing in comfort throughout the summer months.

Every penny we receive goes towards providing the best possible care for our children, and a project of this size is beyond what our everyday budget can cover.
