Why send your kids to an arts camp, when you can send them to an arts college?

At Columbia's ArtStart summer arts camp program, your child will enjoy the resources of an arts and communication college: theaters, galleries, workshops, and equipment. The result is an unforgettable and productive summer in a safe and personalized environment.

Campers are assigned to small groups with artists their own age, with one staff member to every six campers. Everyone attends 4 daily classes: Visual Arts, Media Arts, and Performing Arts, with an alternating Dance and Music class. Our work and fun come together in a stage performance, film screening, and gallery opening at the end of the 7-week session.

Our counselors and teachers are select students, alumni, and working artists from the Columbia College community and beyond. Your camper will remain with an assigned trio of counselors all day, attending classes, field trips, outdoor lunch in Grant Park, and guest artist workshops together. Counselors assist teachers with classroom curriculum and activities while attending to your child’s special talents and interests.

Program cost is $2,885 for the 7-week session, with a $250 discount for each additional sibling. An optional After Camp extension is $450 for the session, or $16 per day.

Where classes are held.

ArtStart takes place in Columbia's Theater building at 72 East 11th Street (between Michigan Avenue and Wabash Avenue) in Chicago's South Loop neighborhood. We are across the street from Grant Park. The CTA's Red, Green, and Orange Lines are just as few blocks away from our building, and the Metra Roosevelt station is a short walk from us across Grant Park.

ABOUT OUR CAMPS

The summer arts camps at NIU are a unique blend of intensity and fun. Campers with a passion for the visual arts, theatre, or jazz get the time to focus on their art – and to learn from the very best teachers.

Campers enjoy six days of arts and recreational activities, sleep in newly renovated university residence halls, and eat in university dining facilities. Classes are taught on-campus by NIU faculty, graduate and undergraduate students, and alumni. Each camp ends with a gala show that is open to the public.

Last year’s camps closed before the discount deadline date of June 1. Don’t wait until the last minute to register! For more information about summer camps, click on your favorite camp at left or e-mail us atdbooth@niu.edu.

Junior and senior high school students love these camps and many return year after year.

SUMMER STUDIO IL INST OF ART SCHAUMBURG June

Schaumburg, Ill. – When most people think of summer camp, they picture pools and creeks, arts and crafts and outdoor sports. But for some kids, it’s serious business. More than 168 high school students are going to give college a try at The Illinois Institute of Art-Schaumburg Summer Studio, a week-long camp that gives kids a sneak peek at the college experience.

For one week, high school sophomores, juniors and seniors take concentrated classes in a course of study within the areas of design, media arts, fashion and culinary. The courses are taught by instructors from The Illinois Institute of Art-Schaumburg. At the end of the week students present their portfolios. Students can enroll in any of the areas of study offered by the college. The intensive program gives the students an opportunity to give college a test-run and allows them to hone their artistic skills.

“Summer Studio provides these students an opportunity to see what kind of curriculum they can expect in college and really helps relieve some anxiety about entering this new stage in their lives,” says The Illinois Institute of Art-Schaumburg President David Ray.

CERAMICS

Lillstreet's long-established clay department offers classes for the total beginner, casual novice or advanced student. Start with the basics of handbuilding and wheelthrowing while you work your way up to creating platters, bowls, teapots, sets on trays, and more. Take advantage of our 200 glaze combinations, firing, and state-of-the art equipment.

TEXTILES

Lillstreet’s textile arts are growing rapidly by demand. This department is for those students looking to take the art of cloth to a new level. From the basics to knitting, dyeing, printing and embellishment, students are literally forming their own unique style. Through a combination of classes and workshops, students can complete original yardage, fashions, home accessories and even two-and three-dimensional artwork.

DIGITAL ARTS & PHOTOGRAPHY

Our newest department! Digital Arts offer exciting opportunities to explore technology and digital media as a artistic outlet. This spring we offer our first classes in Digital Photography. Over the summer and fall, our offerings will expand to include other digital media.

VISITING ARTISTS WORKSHOPS

The Visiting Artist Workshops will focus on bringing in nationally recognized artists. They are designed to provide new challenges and education for Lillstreet students and artists within our community. This will be a continuing rotation of artists, so check back often!

PRINTMAKING

The printmaking area offers a range of courses in a variety of traditional print media: relief, intaglio, monoprint, litho transfers and screenprinting (used in monotype and intaglio). We place particular emphasis on expanding the artist’s ideas and options with his/her work. Most courses cover and explore many non-traditional and mixed media approaches as well as in-depth teaching of traditional printmaking techniques.

PAINTING & DRAWING

Lillstreet offers courses in a broad spectrum of 2 dimensional media, from watercolor to printmaking. Beginning classes introduce students to the study of visual arts, and encourage the development of technical skill and personal creativity. Advanced students will refine their skill, enabling their own artistic vision while encouraging their dedication to studio practice.

METALSMITHING & JEWELRY

Welcome to Lillstreet’s esteemed Jewelry and Metalsmithing department. Here you will find courses that give you access to create original accessories like earrings, rings, necklaces, glass beads and more! The department boasts two large metal studios and one glass studio. Lillstreet offers an atmosphere appropriate for novice and expert alike. Students can join a class confident that they will learn the basic skills required to complete a few one-of-a kind pieces.

GLASS

The glass studio is a vital part of Lillstreet Art Center's studio community. Classes allow students to explore several different glass techniques such as bead making, fusing, kiln casting and sculpture. All levels of students are supported in an educational and relaxed setting. Join us on the third floor to create beautiful glass forms!
