If you are looking for specific information about specific topics, try a DATABASE, such as Gale, which is currently free.
What is a database?
A database is a searchable collection of materials, usually with a specific focus. Some databases include full texts of articles, and some only index the citations of articles. Many databases are commercially produced, but there is typically no advertising. This is because institutions pay for access, so the creators are motivated to include only accurate, relevant, and up to date information. Databases include information that isn't readily available on the web, or isn't available for free, so you'll get different information than you will with a Google search.
What database should I use?
Select your database by thinking about the type and depth of information you need. To peruse the databases: HERE IS A LINK to the FCTS page that lists databases that are appropriate and available for educational purposes. The description of each database will help you decide which one to use for your research project.
Examples:
I'm writing a persuasive essay about an important social issue.
I'm writing an essay about a historical movement, and I can't decide between suffrage and the anti-war movement during Vietnam.
Try "US History in Context"
I'm writing a paper on my ideal job or career.

Does FCTS buy any databases?
Massachusetts residents have free access to a number of databases. FCTS does not buy any databases directly because we have access to so many for free!
