Step 1: What is an argument essay?

An argument essay is an essay where you make a decision about a subject and prove it with facts.

A. Look at the chart. This lists what an argumentative essay IS and IS NOT.

Step 2: What is a good topic for an Argumentative Essay?

A good topic is one where you can make a decision about an issue. Some people should agree with your decision and some people may not agree with your decision. You have to convince them that your decision is a good one.

A. Look at the chart. Why do you think these topics are good or bad?

B. It is a good idea to make a PRO/CON chart to see the different sides of a topic. If you can make a pro/con chart about a topic, then it is a good topic! A pro/con chart lets you see the different reasons for each side of an issue. If you have a lot of reasons to support your decision, then you will be able to write a good argumentative essay.

Step 3: How to write a thesis statement.

A thesis statement is a sentence that takes a side on a topic. It will be the "MAIN IDEA" of the essay.

A. Watch this BrainPop video about MAIN IDEAS.

Then answer the questions on your information packet. Remember you use the school's username and password to log in.

B. From Slide # 1, write down the ingredients of a good thesis statement in your information packet.

Then, click through the slide show and see if you can tell which statement is a good thesis statement or not.
