Who is Alexander Hamilton?
1. An immigrant orphan, born on the island of Nevis
Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Island
Mother = Half British / Half French
Father = Scottish
2. Sailed to NY as a teenager.
A hurricane destroyed his island. His mother died and father abandoned him.
Impressed with Hamilton’s writing and speaking abilities, the people on the island raised money for him to obtain an education in America.
Attended King’s College, now Columbia University.
3. Assisted George Washington in the Revolution.
Led the battle against the British in Yorktown, VA in 1781.
4. Co-Founded the First Bank in North America.
Bank of New York
5. Married Elizabeth [Eliza] Schuyler [daughter of a general].
Had 8 kids together.
6. Treasury Secretary
Given that title when Washington became President.
Established a trading relationship with Great Britain.
7. Became a founding father of the United States.
Considered an American revolutionary leader
Assisted in writing the American States Constitution.
During that time, he had an affair. This affair was considered the first political sex scandal of the US.
8. Made an enemy with Aaron Burr
Former Attorney General
Hamilton ruined his chances of winning governorship of NY.
Refusal to apologize led to a duel in New Jersey. Both rowed across the Hudson from Manhattan. Hamilton’s shot hit a tree. Burr’s shot hit Hamilton in the lower abdomen. He died the next day.
Why is his story important?
Hamilton is a founding father of the United States.
Fought in the American Revolutionary War [1775 - 1783].
Drafted the Constitution.
Served as the first ever Secretary of the Treasury.
Founder and chief architect of the American financial system.
The musical explores how everyone has a history. A want to leave a legacy is what drives someone’s ethical life and encourages him / her to work for what he / she believes in.
