Whole Group: Brainstorm/Review Exhibition Etiquette

• Together we will review the exhibition schedule and expectations for where you should be when.  Main differences to point out include:

  • You will report to Project Seminar first thing in the morning (8 - 8:55)

  • After project seminar, head to your advisor's room for Advisory (9 - 9:40)

  • At the end of advisory, we will discuss expectations.

  • We will walk to the JMKAC for MS Exhibitions which go from 10 - 12

  • We will eat lunch AT the JMKAC. Please remember to bring a bag lunch if you did not request one from school. Here is the list in case you forgot.

  • We will walk continue to watch MS exhibitions until 3pm.

  • Pickup is at the JMKAC at 3pm! Please remind your ride. We will not be walking back to school as a group.

• Go Around: Think of one expectation we should remember when walking to the art center, when viewing presentations of learning, when presenting, or when walking through the JMKAC space. Give a thumbs up when you are ready to share. We will go around to share once everyone is ready!

Some expectations to cover if students do not think of them on their own.

• Since pickup is at the JMKAC, please bring whatever you need to go home with you to the JMKAC. All coats and belongings will be left in the coat room. If you don't need to bring something home, leave it at school. There should be nothing besides your presentation materials entering the theater.

• Phones are not to be seen at all on the walk or at the JMKAC (even lunch). If a teacher sees your phone, they will ask to keep it for the rest of the day.

• We are walking on Tuesday and Thursday - WEAR A COAT AND WARM CLOTHING!!!

• We should stay on the sidewalks and walk to and from the art center (no going on grass/walking/running around people/touching the snow ice or trees, etc).

• We are walking as an advisory group! At each road crossing, please wait for your advisor to tell you to cross. Advisors should count your whole group and then cross together. Please do not run ahead or get behind.

• At the JMKAC, we need to be mindful that it is open to the community and is an art gallery. Please do not touch anything in the galleries, and stay in the location you are supposed to be in (no roaming). In addition, when we arrive, we should be quiet until we get into the theater.

• During presentations, we should sit with our feet in front of us and eyes on the presenter, so we are showing respect to the presenters who worked hard on their project! (Not laying down, having hood up, head on headrest, etc).

• Please do not ask to get up and leave during a presentation. There will be designated bathroom breaks. If it is an emergency, ask at the end of a presentation.

• All students are in the theater, so we will sit with our advisory, unless you are about to present. If you are side talking, your advisor will choose a seat for you.

• Discuss meeting point for attendance when you get to the JMKAC

• ADVISORS: Keep the lobby clear. Do not gather in the lobby. Count students outside the JMKAC when you arrive, have them drop things off in the coat room and go straight to the theater quietly where you can make sure your whole group is there and sitting together.

Whole Group: It is important to remember that our peers worked hard on their presentations and we should be respectful and encouraging of their work! Please try to participate in the thinking routines and show your appreciation in an appropriate way.

• Login to Skyward (using the same information you use to login to your chromebook)

• Click Gradebook

• If the dropdown arrows next to each class are open, close them

• Color up to your grade on your grade tracker in your advisory binder!

If you are unsure why you have a certain grade, open the dropdown arrow next to the grade and look at each assignment. You can also check which assignments are missing.

SMART Goal Setting: Use the evidence from Skyward and what you have coming up in classes to write your SMART Goal in your binder! This may be a class that you are not passing and need to improve, or something that is coming up due that you have not yet completed. Remember the example goal we modeled last week!

**Remember to meet and count your advisees outside the JMKAC, drop things off in the coat room, then head to the Theater and find a place to sit together in the center section!**

During lunch, make put your advisees in groups of three or four to rotate for the gallery walk. The gallery walk is from 2:40 - 3:20 in the Matrix. Students should rotate to the different artists to hear about their process and give feedback.

When students are finishing up in the gallery walk, have them grab their things and wait outside for rides. Please make sure to have students check out with you when they leave and keep track on your roster of who has gotten picked up.

Gathering: Weather Report Share a weather report on your week! We will go around and have everyone share.

Whole Group - Friday Ritual! This month we will be going back to TASK for our Friday Ritual! Each Friday, advisory's will participate in a challenge to earn points for their advisory. This week's task is pictionary!

• Circle Up!

• Eahc person will take a turn being the drawer.

• When you are the drawer, your advisor will give you a card. Use the whiteboard to draw the object or thing on your card.

• All other advisees are guessing.

• Once someone has guessed correctly, they will be the next drawer. If you get a repeat drawer, the have to choose someone else who has not yet had a turn.

• Keep track of how many cards you get through and report to Mrs Kissinger.

• Points will be awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place each week. At the end of the month, we will announce our winners!

Conferencing & PenPals!

Gathering: Stuffed Toy Toss Share a success you have had this week!

Goal Check In: One student should read off the goals that are still left on the goal board. If you finished your goal, take it down and throw it away! You should identify something else to work on during this time if I am not conferencing with you today. If you did not yet finish your goal, work to finish it now!

Whole Group - PenPal Writing: You have all received a letter from a High School Buddy who will be your new pen pal! While I am conferencing with students, you should read the letter and respond. 

Your letter should include the following:

• Greeting

• One thing you have in common with the person

• Respond to the questions they asked

• Share at least two fun facts about you

• Ask one or two follow up questions

When you are done with your letter:

• Fold it (fancy or just in a square)

• Write your penpals name on the outside

• Decorate it if you have time using colored pencils or markers

Independent: You should be writing your penpal letter while I am conferencing with individual students. Please turn it in to me when you are done!

Each advisory will have supplies. Your advisor will have examples of ornaments you could make with the supplies you were given. If you have extra supplies, feel free to bring them in! You could also get creative and make your own! We will spend this time creating ornaments together.

Extended Gathering: Everybody Who!

Stay Circled Up for the Extended Gathering! 

• There should be enough chairs in the circle for all but one person. 

• The person in the middle starts by saying "Everybody Who... " and then something that is true about them

• If the statement is also true for you, move to a different chair. This cannot be the chair next to you, unless that is the only other person who moved.

• Whoever is left without a chair shares next, and so on until everyone has had a chance to share.

• Meals on Wheels is an organization in Sheboygan County that makes, packs, and delivers meals to residents of Sheboygan who are homebound.

• The ornaments we are making will be delivered to the patrons with their meals around Christmas time!

• Each student should make at least one ornament and one magnet.

  • You have today, Friday the 12th, and Monday the 15th advisory times to work on this project.

Each advisory will have supplies. Your advisor will have examples of ornaments you could make with the supplies you were given. If you have extra supplies, feel free to bring them in! You could also get creative and make your own! We will spend this time creating ornaments together.

• All students can raise hands to share what they think they know about POLs at Etude

• Discussion leader should then provide an overview to the group. Here are some points to help guide the conversation.

  • At middle school POLs, we share a learning claim, three artifacts to support our claim, share our grades from each class, and reflect on our habits of professionalism

  • We reflect on our learning in our academic classes, and use these reflections to identify two academic and one seminar artifact we want to highlight at our POL.

  • We reflect on our habits in advisory, and write a reflection about what we are doing well and what we want to improve.

  • We use a slideshow template to gather all of our information and present to our family/advisory

  • Your POL should last about 30 to 45 minutes

  • Parent signup for POLs will open on Monday, November 3rd

  • Trimester 1 POLs are November 24th (half day) and November 25th (full day)

Habits Continuum:  I am going to pass out a habits continuum that asks you to rate yourself on skills necessary to be successful in the professional world. Whole Group: Today we will work as an advisory to decide what we want to do with the school community when we host town hall. Town hall activities on Community Building weeks should be activities that require each member of an advisory to participate in some way. This can be a competitive activity, or just a community building activity without competition involved. The goal is to build community within your advisory and as a school through shared experiences. Examples of things we have done before include...

• Task Wheel (complete as many tasks as you can)

• Silent Scavenger Hunt

• Build Challenges (egg drop, build the tallest tower, etc)

• Minute to Win It

• Holiday themed activities (depending on time of year)

These are just a few ideas, but any activity that requires all to participate and work on collaboration and communication works! 

Here is the town hall agenda template to keep in mind as you are deciding on activities. (do not edit this one, make a copy!) It may help for us to brainstorm activities first, then vote as a group. We can fill out the agenda part when it gets closer to our town hall hosting date. (advisors, develop a structure for how you want to run this part with your group - trash talk ideas/quick jot and think pair share, etc)

Grade Tracker: We will start tracking our grades this week! I will come around to make sure you know how to get into Skyward and check grades. If you are confused by the number grades, note that we will talk more about standards based grading at town hall tomorrow!

• If the dropdown arrows next to each class are open, close them

• Color up to your grade on your grade tracker in your advisory binder!

If you are unsure why you have a certain grade, open the dropdown arrow next to the grade and look at each assignment. You can also check which assignments are missing.

SMART Goal Setting: Use the evidence from Skyward and what you have coming up in classes to write your SMART Goal in your binder! This may be a class that you are not passing and need to improve, or something that is coming up due that you have not yet completed. Remember the example goal we modeled last week!

Partner Check In: Share your goal with your assigned buddy! This is the person (besides me) who will hold you accountable this week for your goal. Check if your partner has...

1. A learning focused goal "I want to learn more about unit rates by completing my 1.4 Assignment on Unit Rates on ALEKS Math"

2. A measurement of success "I will have turned in my assignment to an 80% or higher and have example problems in my notes"

For today’s gathering, I will offer up two options and ask you all which choice you would choose, if they had to choose one.  You can ask clarifying questions before deciding, and I will try my best to answer them. After sharing the idea, I will have you raise hands for which you would choose and then have a few friends share out why.

TUESDAY: Goal Setting/Grade Tracker

Tuesdays are Academic Advisement days, where we check our grades and write a goal for the week. Since we do not yet have grades, we are going to focus on how to write effective SMART Goals Today!

Head to your assigned table and do the quick jot. Once you are done, circle up and sit by your name tent!

• Quick Jot: Write on a piece of paper a goal you have for this year. It could be a current goal for one of your classes or a larger goal related to habits of professionalism.

• Turn and Talk: Share your current goal with the person next to you!

  1. After you are done talking with your partner, one person from each pair will share their goal with the group.

• Whole Group Practicing SMART Goals: Together we will take one of your goals and turn it into a SMART Goal!

Use the SMART Goal setting sheet, either projected or write the letters on the board, and walk through each step with students. Remind them of the importance of learning focused goals as well as being specific.

• Independent: Instead of doing the whole smart goal setting sheet today, just write your goal on a small piece of paper and put it on your advisor's goal board! We will check in on progress with these goal sthroughout the week.

Draw the most accurate drawing based on verbal instructions. Additional instructions will be given every minute.  After every section of instructions, your advisory must change to a new artist. Everyone must take a turn. The given instructions should result in one collaborative drawing. Instructions will only be read once. They will not be repeated.

Developing Lunch Expectations: On Thursday, we will start eating lunch in the cafeteria as a whole school. In order to make sure that this is a comfortable space to eat for all students, we are going to work as an advisory to review the expectations that were developed last year and make any adjustments as needed. At town hall on Wednesday, any additions or changes your advisory wants to propose will be presented so we can finalize expectations prior to Thursday's lunch time.

Now we will develop other expectations or options we think would help make lunch enjoyable for all students!

• Independent [5 min] On a whiteboard or piece of scratch paper, brainstorm guidelines you think should be followed during lunch time in the cafeteria. What should you be able to do? What should not be allowed? What would make that time more enjoyable for you?

• Mix and Mingle [2 min] Get up and walk around the room. Share your ideas with a partner when I say mingle. Once you have both shared, you can head back to your seats.

• Share Out [10 min] I will call on each person to share out their ideas. We will then review the lunch expectations from last year and see if there are any things we listed that should be added, or if there are any existing expectations we would like to change.

Advisors: Use this Circle Lesson Plan to help facilitate today's agenda

Gathering:  Go Around Last week you wrote me an email answering some of the following questions. Think of your response to any of the three questions and give me a thumbs up when you are ready to share!

1. What do you need from your peers in order to feel you can be successful in a group setting?

2. What do you feel you can contribute to the group, or individuals in the group?

3. What do you need from me as an advisor to feel supported and held accountable?

We will go around and each person will share a response. I will write them on the board as you are sharing. 

Advisory Overview: We will connect the needs/attributes that you listed to what happens each day in advisory. For example “I need people to help keep me on track with my home learning” this fits into Tuesday’s (goal setting), Wednesdays (GWT), and Thursdays (conferencing).

Extended Gathering - Two Truths and a Lie: During this activity, you will each share three statements about you. Two of those statements should be true, and one will be a lie. As a group, we will try to guess which is untrue based on what we know about you!

1. Write three statements and your name on a notecard

2. Make sure two are true and one is a lie, but don't label them as true or false

3. Come back to the circle when you are ready to share!

4. I will read the cards, and the group will guess which is true or a lie by raising your hand and sharing why you think that. 

5. After we decide, the person who's card was read will reveal the correct answer!

School Safety Drill with Mr Hamm

All students will stay in their advisory after lunch for the school safety drill. Advisors should join the google meet link which will be provided in the calendar invite. After the drill is done, students can go to period 6.

Grab a writing utensil and two pieces of scratch paper. Head to your seats and answer the prompts below, each on a separate sheet.

Do Now: Quick Jot...

• Question 1: Write down how you keep track of your deadlines and tasks. What does that system look like for you? If you don’t have one, what are the challenges that prevent you from having one?

• Question 2: Write a space/place that you use to do homework outside of school. Where is it? What does it look like? If you don’t have one, what are the challenges that prevent you from having one?

Gathering: Trash Talk!

Circle up chairs and bring your papers with you to the circle. You do not need to write your name on them.

• Round 1 - throw your papers with your first question into the center. Each person will grab and read one!

• Round 2 - repeat for the second question

Advisors should write the response to each on chart paper or on the whiteboard. 

Whole Group: Why is it important to have a way to organize your tasks and set aside time to do work from school outside of class time as needed? What are some resources available to you to use that help you find out this information at school? What are the purposes of each of these? We will brainstorm as a group and then look over some that are available to all students.

Gathering Prompt: High, Low, Potato!

Think back on the first two weeks of school. What was your high, or favorite/best moment? What was a low, or worst moment? What is your potato... something that was just in the middle? Turn and talk to share all with your partner, then we will go around the circle and have each person choose one thing to share.

Extended Gathering: Name Juggle 

I have five soft objects for us to throw. We’re going to establish a pattern of tossing and catching the object. I will say a student’s name and then toss the object underhand to her. That student will then say another student’s name and toss the object to him. You need to remember who tossed the object to you and who you tossed the object to. You will always catch the object from the same person and always throw to the same person. We will do this a couple of times using one object to establish the pattern. After you have practiced with one object then introduce another object. The goal is to see how many objects we can juggle as a group. We will pause throughout to reflect on what is working and what is not working!
