While our focus on community building is consistent, within the advisory program we intentionally facilitate activities to build community on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Mondays students partake in extended gatherings, with a purpose of getting to know each other and connect through different issues, successes, or events taking place in students lives. Wednesdays, the whole school community connects through Town Hall where we do community building activities, work to solve whole school issues, and watch and reflect on student performances of their work. On Fridays, each advisory creates a Friday Ritual that they do every week in an effort to build trust and community amongst their advisory or help the school or outside community in some way.
The role of an advisor in regards to academic advisement is to support each advisee through their transition from elementary to middle school and prepare them for their transition into high school. On Tuesdays, each advisory participates in academic goal setting, where students share successes and issues they are having academically and then write a SMART goal to work toward reaching their goal. On Thursdays, advisors one on one conference with their students to help follow up on the goals the advisees have set, as well as any other issues they might be having. These are two of the ways that we are on our advisees cases, but also on their sides.
The advisor serves as the main contact person between the school and their advisees parents. If parents have any questions, they know that they can contact their students advisor. In addition, if an advisor sees a need for communication, they should reach out to the advisees parents. At the end of each trimester, we also facilitate student led Presentations of Learning, where parents are invited to see what their students have learned throughout the trimester and share in the reflection on student learning, growth, and future goals.
Community Building On Mondays, our advisory participates in an extended gathering. The purpose of this gathering is to get to know more about each other. The protocol for a ritualized Monday in advisory is as follows...

Extended Gathering: The gathering varies depending upon the day, but will require all students to participate and result in getting to know each other better as a group!
Ticket Out: Share something you learned or that surprised you about a peer from today's gathering!
RESOURCES: Gathering Folder containing each of the gatherings and a description
Academic Advisement On Tuesdays, our advisory creates SMART goals as well as tracks our grades using Skyward and our Grade Tracker. The purpose of Tuesdays is to help keep us focused on our overall academic goals and progress. The protocol for Tuesdays is as follows...

Independent: SMART Goal Setting and Grade Tracker
Partner Check In: Have your partner check your SMART Goal, then write it on a notecard to post in the space.

RESOURCES: We have paper copies in our binders, but here are digital resources in case you need them!
Academic Advisement On Wednesdays, we as an advisory participate in Guided Work Time. The purpose of this time is for students to work either independently or collaboratively toward accomplishing learning/work for their classes. Our protocol for Wednesdays is as follows...
Circle Up!
Share your measurable goal for today & who is involved
GWT -- get to work [silent (unless collaborating), independent, focused]
Ticket Out: Share what you accomplished and next steps.
RESOURCES: You will use a paper guided work time goal tracker to track your goals and progress throughout each Wednesday GWT!
Following GWT, we attend a weekly Town Hall meeting with the whole school. This could be focused on school issues, student habits, or building school community.
Academic Advisement & Future Planning On Thursdays, the advisor spends time conferencing one on one with students. The purpose of this time is to check in to see what students are succeeding or struggling with, and what support they might need to be successful. Our protocol for Thursdays is as follows...
Circle Up!
Gathering: Share a success you have had this week.
Check in on goals! If you have accomplished your goal, you can take it down off the goal board.
One-on-One Conferencing: Your Advisor will meet one on one with three students. If you are not conferencing, you should be working silently and independently toward your weekly goal. If you have accomplished your goal, you should be working on another assignment, ALEKS Skills, Lexia, or reading.
Some weeks we will also do future planning around topics such as organization, healthy habits, and career/college exploration.
Community Building On Fridays we as an advisory participate in a group activity! The activity is chosen by the group and we do the same Friday ritual for about a month before changing to something new. The protocol for Friday's is as follows...

Friday Ritual: All advisees participate
Ticket Out: Share anything you need to accomplish over the weekend!
Some months we have school wide rituals such as door decorating contests or service projects.
