Study Hall Policies at Elizabeth High School
Study Hall is a class designed to allow students to stay on top of homework and studying. For this reason, maintaining a quiet and academic environment in the class is very important.
The following activities are good uses of study hall time:
If a student does not need his time for one of the above activities, he must have something to do that is in keeping with our quiet and academic atmosphere. This could be reading, writing, or something else suitable, but may not be playing videogames or sleeping. Listening to music with headphones is allowed when no one else can hear it, the student is also engaged in one of the above activities, and the device is left in plain sight on the desk during the entire block.
If a student needs to get help from a teacher, he must have a pass from that teacher prior to the start of study hall. Students also need a note from a teacher if they intend to work with another student on a joint project. (To ask a friend a brief question about an assignment, students need to ask me permission, go to the hallway in order to not disturb the class, and return within 10 minutes.) Additionally, a student may go to the library in order to do research or work on the computers, but in order to keep students from abusing this opportunity, they must get a pass from a teacher stating what they need to get done. Hall passes for other purposes, such as using the bathroom or going to a locker, are limited to one per block.
In order to help students use their time wisely, I will check grades on the first day of class each week. Any students with a D or an F in a class must fill out a form indicating what they need to do to bring the grade up and have the form signed by their teacher and parent. This form needs to be shown to me at the beginning of our next class. Alternatively, students can copy me on an email sent to their teacher and parents about their grade.
Students receive a Pass/Fail grade for study hall. This grade is based on attendance and adherence to the policies. Students will lose points for things like whispering, not doing appropriate work, tardiness, misusing pass privileges, not returning grade checks, or other actions not in keeping with the necessary atmosphere of the class. It is possible to receive negative points in a class period.
