I was thinking I should post something about GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) because it has been driving me insane. I am all for data security, but I think it is possible for people to get ridiculous. The easiest way to ensure your private business is kept private, is by not posting it online in the first place and being careful about what you share, even with reputable organisations.
Don't get me wrong. There are some good points to the GDPR. I particularly like the "Right to be Forgotten" clause, whereby people can have data erased or removed when they no longer want others to have access to it. I also like the added emphasis on companies being required to put stricter data protection measures in place.
The thing that bothers me most is that people get really panicked about security when something like this happens. They post all over Facebook and Twitter about not wanting their information to go public, and they cancel media permissions for their children at school...then have their profile (including photos of their children, new home - complete with address, and more) set to public.
So yes, be concerned about your privacy, but set your rules before you post anything, and then stick to those rules. The amazing Chris Betcher said it best here, so please go over and have a read.
