Work in your group to build a parachute that moves slowly to the ground using only the materials provided.
Observe the parachute.
Can you see anything that might be changed to help your parachute fall.. straighter? ...more slowly? Try it out... change it... try it again. Make the best parachute you can.... but watch the time!
Step Six - Data Collection
Move to the drop station.
Drop the parachute three times and record the time it takes for the washers to touch the ground each time.
Use your roles:
Base Jump Technician - Drop the parachute. Rest your elbow on the ledge and hold your arm out at a 45 degree angle. When you let go, yell start for the timer to begin.
Timer - Time each drop. Use your phone or another timer to determine the number of seconds for each drop. Begin when the dropper says start and stop when the washers touch the ground.
Data Recorder - Record the seconds for each drop in the collaborative spreadsheet. Calculate the average speed for the three drops.
Technologist - Film the drops, and prepare video for playback.
