A conductor is a material that does allow heat or cold to pass through easily.
Let’s try an experiment:
1. Place 3 different spoons (silver, plastic and wooden spoon) into a bowl of hot water.
2. Wait a few minutes, then carefully touch each spoon. What did you notice?
A cookie sheet is another example of a conductor. It transfers heat and helps in the cooking of cookies. Can you think of some other conductors?
Insulation is a material that does not allow heat or cold to pass through easily. An insulator will help to keep hot things hot and cold things cold.
Let’s try an experiment: We are going to find out which material is the best insulator – tin foil, fabric, cotton balls, bubble wrap, or paper bag. (You can use tape to attach the material to your glass jar).
The teacher will fill each jar with very cold water (include ice cubes).
Together take the temperature and record. Then wrap each jar with a different material. Check the temperature again after a period of time and record.
