The Gordon W. Mitchell School, as a learning community, is dedicated to maximizing the opportunity for each student to fully challenge her/his intellectual capacity while developing social responsibility and a healthy physical and emotional well being. This also rings true in my class.
As a firm believer + practitioner in the Responsive Classroom approach, I strive to create a classroom community that is safe and promotes high student achievement. I want my students to feel comfortable to take academic risks and enjoy their learning experiences. My expectation is that the children are respectful, work hard, and always give their best effort. The Responsive Classroom is research-based and proves that social/emotional learning is just as important as the academic curriculum itself.
In the summer of 2018, I was excited to take part in a Mindfulness Educators course. Mindfulness is the ability to be aware of where we are and what we are doing. Scholarly research finds that mindfulness practice decreases stress and anxiety, increases attention, improves interpersonal relationships, strengthens compassion, and confers a host of other benefits. I am thrilled to take my knowledge into my classroom! Last year we incorporated many skills and strategies into our Mindfulness block, and together with Mr. Gordon we introduced the students to Yoga as well. You can find out more information about Mindfulness in the classroom here.
Below are some of my favorite quotes from the incredible and inspirational speaker, Kid President. I'll be referencing him a lot this year!
