The First Graders will be learning 93 heart words this year!  Each week, we will be studying new trick words in Fundations.  These are words that cannot necessarily be tapped out, but have to be committed to memory, as they are the most common words that students will see as they read, and will use as they write.  As we practice our heart words throughout the week, we will chant, "Trick words, trick words, you can't tap.  You must spell them in a snap!"  Each night, please help your child to review their trick word cards as they are sent home.  Students will be assessed on how well they can spell their trick words, and also how they use these words in sentences.

Each night of the week, Monday-Friday, please help your child to select a book to read for about 20 minutes.  This book can be shared by you reading to them, them reading to you, or a combination of both!  If your child needs support at this time, please encourage them to listen to the reading and find words they do know!  Over time, please encourage them to find books that they can read on their own.  Have your child color in their monthly reading log and hand it in at the end of each month. January reading logs will be due by 1/30!

Encourage your child to find books that interest them, as that is the first step to becoming an independent reader!
