National Junior Honor Society

East Haven Academy Chapter

The National Junior Honor Society is a prestigious organization which recognizes students in Grades Six, Seven, and Eight who demonstrate high scholastic achievement and a high level of character based on the standards set by the national organization and must abide by the constitution and bylaws of the National Junior Honor society of Secondary Schools on Reston, Virginia. According to these bylaws, membership should not and will not be considered on the basis of grades alone. Students will be considered eligible for membership to East Haven Academy’s Chapter when they have achieved First Honors  each marking period in a school year (August to June). (First Honors requires an average of 90 or above in their core subjects and no class grade below an 85.). Furthermore, these students must meet high standards of leadership, service, character, and citizenship. Students who meet all of these criteria will be sent a letter inviting them to apply by completing a Student Activity Information form, an essay and providing documents of their completion of ten hours of community service. All forms will be reviewed by a committee of faculty members, the NJHS Advisor and Principal to determine the eligible members to be inducted.

An Induction ceremony will be held in the Fall for all new members as well as renewing members from the previous school year.

Membership Requirements

Once students have been inducted into East Haven Academy’s National Junior Honor Society they will be expected to fulfill their membership for that school year in the following ways:

● They MUST maintain First Honors each marking period of the school year.

● They MUST maintain high levels of Character, Leadership, Service and Citizenship throughout the school community.

● Attendance is expected at all NJHS meetings.

● Participation in ALL NJHS sponsored events throughout the school year is expected.

● Ten hours of community service must be completed by the last week of May.

● They MUST adhere to our dress code policy.

NJHS Probation

Members who do not achieve First Honors, but do achieve Second Honors ( an average of 85 in the core subjects and no class grade below an 80) will be placed on probation for the next marking period and must achieve First Honors the next marking period to maintain their membership in the NJHS. Students/Parents will receive written notice and/or electronic notice of probation from the NJHS Advisors. Members who do not achieve First or Second Honors in a marking period will be dismissed from East Haven Academy’s NJHS.

• Grade 6: Overall numeric average is computed with ILA counted twice (ILA is the integration of Language Arts and Social Studies), Math counted once and Science counted once. Total is then divided by 4. (Spanish is not counted in this computation.)

• Grades 7 and 8: Overall numeric average is computed the same as Grade 6, with the addition of Spanish being counted at .4. Total is then divided by 4.4. Members who do not achieve First or Second Honors in a marking period will be dismissed from the East Haven Academy Chapter of the National Junior Honor Society.

Behavior as a NJHS Member

National Junior Honor Society Members are expected to be role models to the rest of the school community in the area of behavior as well as scholarship. Therefore, students who make choices to violate school rules, or act in a way that is not to the high standards of leadership and citizenship expected of NJHS members will be placed on probation for a period of thirty days. During this time they will be expected to correct and change their behavior to be that which is expected of a NJHS member. After the thirty day period students who have not changed or corrected their behavior will no longer be a member of the National Junior Honor Society.

Possible Reasons for Behavioral Probation

● Student has been given a consequence directly related to their behavior choices in a class, cafeteria, or school event such as an ODR, Detention, or other consequence deemed appropriate by their teacher or the principal.

● Student shows disrespect for classmates, teachers, or school property.

● Students/Parents will receive written notification of probation from the NJHS.

Community Service

Community Service is service given as a volunteer to a non-profit organization. Eligible members are expected to complete ten hours as a volunteer as part of their application to the NJHS.

All NJHS members are expected to complete ten hours of community service each school year they are a member.

Examples of Community Service

Church projects

School related activities (helping at events, etc.)

Library volunteer

Food Bank

Soup Kitchen

Students need to complete a pre-approval form obtained from the NJHS Advisor before their community service dates. They will, also, need to pick up a Community Service form to take with them to be signed by the organization they are volunteering with. Students keep these forms until they need to be handed in as part of their application or renewing membership.
