Biochemistry

Objectives

By the time we are done with the unit you should be able to ...

  1. Explain how atoms interact paying special attention to the concept of valence electrons.

  2. List each of the 3 organic macromolecules as well as be able to explain the formation, structure, and function of each.

  3. Apply the concept of energy transfer to breaking and creating of bonds between within macromolecules.

  4. Generate a model for how animals gain and lose mass using their digestive and circulatory systems.

  5. Describe how enzymes work and predict the impacts of external factors on reaction rates controlled by those enzymes.

  6. Analyze a scientific study. Make a claim about that analysis and support it with evidence and reasoning.

Research Lab #1 Enzymes

Reaction Rate

In this lab students will chose an independent variable to manipulate and measure the impact of that variable on the rate of decomposition of hydrogen peroxide.

Enzyme-Substrate Complex

Animation that explain the basic mechanics of enzymes

Activation Energy

Animation that explains who enzymes regulate the rate of reactions

Factors

Video explanation of how environmental factors impact how enzymes work
