Second graders are required to accumulate 25 AR points throughout the year. This translates to about 50 books read and questions answered with 100 % accuracy. Fractions of points are earned if your child does not receive 100%. Each student will take an Accelerated Reader STAR test once a month. This computerized test places each student in a range of AR levels that are optimum for that specific child. These levels coordinate with AR colors as pictured below. Your child may check out books from the classroom or from the school library within their color range. When they are able to read the book fluently (smoothly and with understanding), ask them basic questions about the book, i.e. "Who, What, When, Where, or How" and they will be ready to test.

Read 3 books 4.0 or higher that are worth at least 4 points
