If you are working on anything that you can get to online; App Inventor, Google Drive, Google Sites, etc., you do NOT need to be in VDI. The only reason you would be in VDI is if you need a program that you do not have (Microsoft Office (Powerpoint, Excel), Inkscape, etc.).
1. Horizon Client VMware App on a Chromebook:
If you are on a Chromebook, search the Google Play store for the Horizon Client Chrome App. You will log into this using your school login/password and then all of the software can be found by going to the Windows Start icon>All Programs>choosing your program. This is the best option for using the VMware.
2. VMware Option (VDI) on a Laptop or Desktop:
Every middle and high school student in the DePere School District has access to a 'Virtual Machine' or VM. This means that just by having an internet connection, students can access their network folder and the software necessary to complete assignments at home. (By logging into the VM, students will have access to Microsoft Office.) To do this, students need to (1) go to https://usddvdi.depere.k12.wi.us , (2) login to the 'HTML access' (click on the blue computer screen like the one shown below), (3) log in using their network username and password, and (4) (click on the user pool available to them (student). This will give them access to their network folder and all the necessary software to complete the assignments at home. Because this is a 'Virtual Machine' a few options won't work; 1) you will not be able to hear sound when in the VM and 2) the Copy and Paste function and other keyboard shortcuts will not work. Please email me if this process does not work for you at hwright@depere.k12.wi.us or the DPMS TTS at mdamsheuser@depere.k12.wi.us.
3. GAFE (Google Apps for Education):
Students at the middle school are given a Google email/account. With this account, they may access several Google Apps including Google Drive. If the assignment is from the Microsoft Suite, students may still upload/download the assignments to their Google Drive to work on at home. If choosing this option, there are three important things to remember:
1) They should NOT 'convert' the assignments to a Google doc/presentation/spreadsheet.
2) They must have Microsoft Office at home to work on it.
3) When they download the assignment from DRIVE at home to work on it, they must reupload in order to have the current file.
