The word etiquette means "the proper way to behave." Concert etiquette is the proper way to behave at a concert.
The main ideas for concert etiquette are (These guidelines are required for performers. More details are below.):
- Stand in the correct singing posture.
- Only applaud at the appropriate times.
- Only sit or stand as a group.
- Walk on and off the risers appropriately.
- Represent the AMS Vocal Music Department with Pride!
General concert etiquette guidelines that everyone should know and observe:
- NO electronic devices!
- If you must use your phone, please LEAVE the auditorium before you speak.
- If you are sitting with a small child, please sit near an exit door.
- If the child begins to scream, take them out immediately!
- Do not allow the child to leave his/her seat.
- Do not leave your seat unless it is an emergency.
- If you must leave your seat, please move only during the applause (wait until the song is over).
- Do not eat, drink, chew gum or make any other noise that would be distracting to the performers.
- Please keep flash photography to a minimum as it may be dangerous or distracting to the performers.
STANDING POSTURE
- Weight should be even on both feet.
- Hands should be down at your sides.
- Eyes should always be on the director.
- Remain still except for facial expression, good breathing technique and (of course) singing.
APPLAUSE
- The appropriate way to applaud is to clap. (No whooping or noises.)
- Applaud only at the end of a song or group of songs.
- You may applaud in the middle of the song after a solo, but this is the only exception.
MOVING FROM ONE PLACE TO ANOTHER
- When going to your seat, remain standing until the designated person gives you the signal.
- When you are going up to perform, reman seated until the designated person gives you the signal.
- You should only sit or stand when the designated person gives you the signal.
WALKING ON AND OFF THE RISERS
- Each row will walk on to the risers as a group.
- Walk softly and quickly.
- Always pay attention when you are in line so there are no gaps in the line.
- Never run or walk slowly while in line.
- DO NOT TALK!
REPRESENT WITH PRIDE
- From the time you enter the building to the time you leave the building, you are a performer.
- Give respect to your fellow performers and fellow choir members at all times.
- All DMS rules and policies must be adhered to at all times.
- Any time or place you are with the choir, you represent all of us.
