Driver Education Program

The David Douglas Program is an approved provider for the State of Oregon.  All instructors are certified to teach Behind the Wheel and classroom instruction.

All students are required to attend 30+ hours of "in class" instruction".  All students are required to drive six hours and to observe six hours.

Driver Ed is making safer drivers and giving peace of mind. Teens who take Driver Ed have a 21%  lower crash rate than those who don't. Teens who take Driver Ed have a 57% lower rate of traffic convictions and can save on car insurance.

Teens under 18 need at least 50 hours of supervised driving practice if they have taken an ODOT approved driver education course. Without the course, 100 hours of supervised driving practice is required. It is important for teens to continue driving practice even after they have their Drivers License.

Each student must complete a minimum of 15 hours practice driving with parent/guardian/other responsible adult at home during the session. Forms to record the times are provided.  Students under the age of 18, at the time of passing Drivers Education, will be given a card that can be used to waive the drive test at the DMV.

All other requirements and restrictions under the Graduated Licensing and DMV licensing are in force

The Graduated Rules          Why drive with Ed

Although we do see a reduction in collision and traffic citations for new drivers completing driver education, data suggest teen drivers are more safe on the road when they continue with parental supervised driving after driver education. Automobile crashes are amongst the leading cause of death for teens and new drivers are most at risk of being in a collision. Driver education curriculum focuses on driver risk prevention strategies. When applied routinely, these strategies significantly reduce risk. Simply having knowledge of safe driving is not enough. Having skills alone is not enough. Safe driving habits are developed through continued practice.
