Language Characteristics

When working with students, there are five language levels that we use to distinguish skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing.  

Level 1 - Entering

Level 2 - Beginning

Level 3 - Developing

Level 4 - Expanding

Level 5 - Bridging

  The files attached below include:

• A brief overview of how a student at this level typically uses English 

• "Can Do Descriptors," or things that we can expect students to be able to do in English at this level

• Instructional techniques that teachers use to help increase understanding in English

• Learning tasks that students can be expected to perform  

The ESL teacher, classroom teachers and specialists (art, music, PE and Health and Wellness teachers) all work hard to help our students improve their English skills throughout the day.
