My homework policy is very flexible. I believe in the importance of allowing kids to be kids and utilizing class time effectively. Kids having time after school to play, go outside, socialize, decompress, enjoy time with family, get adequate sleep, etc., helps them to come to school ready to learn.
At the end of the day, students are encouraged to write down their homework for that night in their planners. However, they will not be penalized for not having their planners filled out and I do not require a signature. I do not police students writing in their planners.
While there may be specific homework assigned on a certain day, students are not penalized for work turned in late until the end of the week. I understand that many families have busy schedules, so I am flexible with when students complete their homework during the week. Students also have the opportunity to complete homework in class if they manage their time well and have extra time. Time management is a life skill we focus on significantly in 4th grade.
If you ever want to supplement the homework that I assign, reading for enjoyment and practicing multiplication facts are always great options.
