So there are a few blog posts floating around the internet about asking your child how school was without asking them directly and getting the obligatory 'I dunno' or yes/no answer (HuffPost, Parent.co, Scholastic, Understood). Basically, asking specific, unexpected/silly, open-ended questions is a great way to get more information out of your student. Here are some of my fav's from around the web:
What's the biggest difference between this year and last year?
What is one thing your teacher likes to do?
What's the best part of your daily schedule this year?
Which of your teachers would survive a Zombie Apocalypse?
If aliens came to your school and beamed somebody up, what 3 kids do you think they would take?
Questions that can be repeatable from day-to-day:
What was the nicest thing you did today for somebody?
What classroom rule was the hardest to follow today?
What is one thing you learned about a friend today?
If you were the teacher tomorrow, what lessons would you teach?
Did you catch anybody picking their nose?
You can even prep them with things to look for in the morning and ask them about it at the end of school. The biggest takeaways: Keep it positive and have fun with it. Enjoy!
