At Arrowwood a continuum of programming services exist for our gifted learners. Gifted Programming is designed to meet the academic, social/ emotional, and behavioral needs of students identified with advanced learning needs. Teachers and support staff differentiate learning opportunities to meet these needs.
Classroom teachers and myself take this collaborative approach to instruction to ensure gifted students are receiving challenging education throughout the whole day. This partnership allows students to get differentiated instruction that meets their specific needs and strengths, allowing for optimal growth.
A gifted and talented teacher pulls all students who have scored proficient on a literacy or math unit pretest into a extension group. The teacher then provides extension activities for these students to deepen their knowledge on the grade level standard. These personalized activities can focus around critical thinking, real world applications and integration of new information.
Cluster grouping is an educational process in which four to six gifted and talented (GT) or high-achieving students or both are assigned to an otherwise heterogeneous classroom within their grade to be instructed by a teacher who has had specialized training in differentiating for gifted learners. The advantages are that they feel more accepted when there are other students just like them in the class. They are more likely to choose more challenging tasks when they are able to work with other gifted students.
