If your actions inspire others to

dream more, learn more, do more and become more,

you are a leader.

--John Quincy Adams

Welcome to class!

Leadership Development will offer you, a junior or a senior, an elective opportunity that will make you think, struggle, explore and create. In this class you will study, question, and challenge the principles of leadership. We will start with the concept of leadership from the inside out, and one of the major sources I will direct your attention to is the book The Seven Habits of Highly Effective Teens by Sean Covey. I will ask you everyday: How would you expect anyone to want to follow you if you don't have your own life in order? Who are you, and who do you wish to continue to be?

Leadership (Fred Smith, LEADERSHIP JOURNAL; Fall 1996, Vol. XVII, No. 4, Page 30)--"The most gifted athletes rarely make good coaches. The best violinist will not necessarily make the best conductor. Nor will the best teacher necessarily make the best head of the department. "

From Manager to Leader (Leslie L. Kossoff)--"The difference between being a manager and being a leader is simple. Management is a career. Leadership is a calling."

We will proceed to some basic principles of leadership; our primary source will be The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership by John Maxwell. What do good and great leaders know is true about leadership?

We will explore trends, paradigms, living leaders, world dictators, Nobel Prize winners.

In the meantime, you will practice teamwork, resource-acquistion, problem-solving, time-management, and service leadership as you complete school service projects. Your service to this school is crucial; I want you to be very proud of something you have accomplished here when you leave this class.--Ms. Dunn

So what is leadership??? Develop a theory as you progress through this class.
