Ms. Dunn,

I hope that everything is getting off to a great start for you and your students as you began a new school year.

Each year Advance VFW Post 8719 will sponsors the Voice of Democracy Essay/Audio Contest. This year we will again sponsor the Voice of Democracy and I hope that you will be interested in having your students, or any of the other high schools students, participate.

If so, the theme this year is "Why I'm Optimistic About our Nation's Future." Each student will write and then record a 3 - 5 minute essay, either on a standard cassette tape or a CD, (please make sure that it is recorded a CD not on a DVD). They must type their essays and label their recording. The students may not, in any way, identify themselves in their recording and they should not put their names in or on their essays. The Official Student Entry Form is their essay's cover sheet. Music, singing, poetry or sound effects are not allowed. Quotations may be used sparingly if plainly identified wherever used. All rules are set by The National VFW and must be followed. The deadline for the students to enter will be November 01, 2013.

There will be cash prizes of $100, $75, $50 and $25 awarded to the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place winners at post level. There is also a $1000 scholarship for any Davie County student that is our post level winner. The student does not have to be a senior in order to win the scholarship. Any student is eligible to win the scholarship all four years that they are in high school. This scholarship is made possible by the Joe H. King Memorial Scholarship Fund and is offered only at VFW Post 8719. There will also be an Awards Dinner in January.

The winning post essays will advance to district level. We will be able to send one essay for every 15 essays that we have entered at post level on to the district level judging. For example, if we have as many as 31 entries we will be able to send 3 essays in to the district. If you, or any of the other teachers, are interested in participating you can find more information about this program at www.vfw.org. Once you get to the website select programs and then go to the Voice of Democracy. Student entry forms may be downloaded and printed entry forms from this website or the students can pick up entry forms in the guidance office.

If you, or any of the other teachers, are interested please let me know. I look forward to your students' participation. If you have any questions, or need any further information, please feel free to contact me at any time at everettnichols@msn.com or by phone at 336-998-8927.

Thank you,

Everett Nichols, Chairman
