Other Opportunities

North choir students have a variety of opportunities to increase their vocal skill and experience

IHSMA All-State Honor Choir

Selection for the All-State Honor Choir is the highest vocal music achievement high school students can achieve in the state of Iowa. Students planning to audition begin the year with North’s All-State camp in early August and then meet after school several days a week until auditions in late October. If selected, students will travel to Ames, Iowa in November to rehearse and perform with the All-State Choir.

OPUS Honor Choir

Freshmen are given the opportunity to audition for the Iowa OPUS honor choir in the fall of each year. Students will prepare the OPUS selections during class and in private lessons, then will send in a vocal audition recording. If selected, students will then travel to Ames, Iowa in November for rehearsal and performance with the honor choir.

Solo & Ensemble Contest

Every year beginning in January and continuing until April, students have the opportunity to rehearse solo and small group music to perform for a judge at Solo and Ensemble contest. This event is held at West High School on a Saturday and students are given a rating from 1-5 on their performance and are given comments on how to improve.

All-School Musical

Each year, the drama and music departments collaborate on an all-school musical.

Follies

Follies is North High Schools variety/talent show that is sponsored by our 53rd St. Singers and run by the NHS Vocal music staff and students. Students are encouraged to put together an act and audition for the show. Auditions take place in the spring and the performances are in late April or May. This is not a music-only show, we encourage dancers, jugglers, comedians, actors, and all other talented individuals to participate.
