WEMS is Emerson Middle School’s weekly news show—created by students, for students! Each Friday morning, it streams into every homeroom to keep everyone updated on school events, activities, and news. Episodes are filled with fun, creative, and informative segments that highlight everything happening around Emerson.
The WEMS team, known as the Eagleeye Correspondents, is open to all 6th, 7th, and 8th graders. Members take part in every step of production—brainstorming ideas, writing scripts, filming, and editing. Many of our segments are inspired by student ideas. For example, a recent episode featured interviews about Fall Break plans—an idea pitched by one of our correspondents!
Thursday Afternoons (After School in Room 233): The whole team meets from 3–4 PM to record, edit, and finalize the weekly broadcast. Scripts are posted on the whiteboard, and students sign up for roles on a first-come, first-served basis.
Working Lunches (7th & 8th Grade): Lunch meetings take place as needed for scriptwriting, planning, and gathering media.
Throughout the Week: Team members collaborate online using Schoology, Google Docs (for scripts), and WeVideo (for editing).
Weather Person: An 8th-grade correspondent adds their unique spin to the weekly weather, sometimes including history, geography trivia, or fun facts.
Pledge Team: A team records a different homeroom reciting the Pledge of Allegiance each week to bring our school community together.
Thumbnail Creator: Designs a custom YouTube thumbnail for each episode.
Classroom & Studio Managers: Leaders who coordinate production and manage the flow of hosts in and out of the green room using walkie-talkies.
Each episode premieres on the WEMS YouTube channel with a five-minute countdown before Friday’s homeroom. Everyone watches together at the same time, and the episode wraps up just as the bell rings!
If you want a creative way to work as a team, build real-world media skills, and share your voice with the whole school, join the WEMS Eagleeye Correspondents. It’s your chance to be part of something exciting while making an impact at Emerson!
