Reading
Together, we practice reading strategies, discuss genres, look at patterns, locate sights words, and use comprehension strategies to understand the stories. We also participate in guided reading in small groups, independent reading on our own, and partner reading with our forest friends. We use the Scholastic Literacy curriculum along with UFLI phonics instruction.
Writing
Writing is an important part of first grade. This year students will work on developing detailed sentences to write narrative, opinion, and expository pieces. We use thinking maps to organize our writing. Students will also use Journals and Writer's Workshop to build their writing skills.
Math
Our new math program is Illustrative Math! We also have time for a math menu which allows the students choice in their independent practice of the skills in each unit and allows me to meet with students in small groups. Each activity has been designed to reinforce skills and well as new skills discussed in our whole group lesson. Math manipulatives are provided so that students are able to use a hands on approach in completing activities.

We are using Twig Science for our Science curriculum.
Our topics include plants, animals, shadows/light, and patterns in the sky.
